Not sure if anyone listens to the "We Want Tacos" podcast with Mark Medina and Bill Oram. But one of their recent episodes was with Byron Scott, who talked about his book, his time with the Lakers, etc. And Medina asked him some really specific questions.
One of the things I found interesting, was if he could do everything over again, would he change things? He responded with no. He said he still would have benched Randle and Russell because he felt like they weren't working hard enough to remain in the starting lineup. He talked about having to install a rule that players are at the facility earlier so they would work out on their own prior to practice. He mentioned practice would start at 11 am and at 10:55, players would walk onto the floor. He also said, "From people I know inside the Lakers organisation, his work habits haven't changed."
What continues to amaze me, and maybe something you would think he would realize: There was no system in place, offensively or defensively to help the players progress. Luke had a system he was running offensively, and you could see the beginning phases of it all last year. With Byron, he made up a brand new system with a month left on the season. And Kobe didn't practice with the team, so it was something he just explained to Kobe over the phone.
Like, he did a piss poor job as the coach of this team and he needs to understand that. I actually agreed with the benching of Randle and Russell at the time. I thought it would help their progress to bounce back and have stronger 2nd halves of the season. Which it did. They both played much better after the All Star Break.
He just barked out orders and specifics and it would change daily. There was no clear message set other than "Work Hard." No modern principles, no nothing. And he can blame it on Kobe all he wants (he wouldn't), but there was a way to develop the youth while at the same time, showing Kobe off his final season.

We should after the stuff he is sharing. Talking about how Mitch said just make sure Kobe doesn't go crazy. Mitch says it is a lie. Stupid. B-Scott got paid. No reason to go their, especially w/ his boy Magic in charge.

Agreed that BS is a classless and a socially unintelligent being. I was mostly having fun turning the thread title on its head.

I don't hate BS. I just think he can't say he is old school and also be a drama queen. Also Stern, Scott and others are just kicking Mitch when he's down. They were teammates in the 80's! It's not needed. The simply answer is they tried. They were paid to do it. Hopefully it goes better for Magic. We all love the Lakers. /drama.
Watched an HBO doc on Magic this week. Didn't know his highschool principle would get Magic to help break up and stop fights! Magic could have got Kobe and Shaq to stay together! He really has a Magic touch. And living w/ HIV, singing about how happy he and dominating health since he got infected is even more amazing than his Laker legacy. I'm in amazement. I know Magic is going to give it his best. And effort and a sound gameplan are all we can ask.
The negative chapter is over. This is where we get back to doing good.

Damn, you're right. I can actually let go of BS and Jim Buss! Hard to fathom but I'm gonna work on removing the stigma I've carried around, and look ahead instead.
And as much as I've voiced my concern before about Magic running his mouth too much without thinking — popular thing to bring up around here the stupid things he has said sometimes — you are so totally right about the effort part, he's sn energy bundle and a half. Magic is a Laker again, in his water, and is gonna work his rear off to make us win more trophies. As long as he does his Magic quietly (away from press) and lets Pelinka strategize and control messaging, I'm actually thrilled to have them in charge, although I do and will continue to miss Mitch, the most underrated GM ever. He only sucked under Jim, besides that he was stellar.
This team, with Luke at the helm making for quick ball sharing style of play, could become a very special team, for many years. There is a chance that Russell, Ingram, Zubač, Randle all have a breakout season starting this fall. They're all ripe for consistently elevated play, which might be all that's needed for all of them to break out. Zub will surely show flashes of potential greatness but I'd give him one more year of feeling things out on the NBA court before expecting him to be a mix of Pau and Marc Gasol.
This is a good time to be a Laker fan, regardless of pending college player picks. Thanks for reminding me of that, sir!

Lmao
Well, he probably actually took that press conference announcing his hiring at face value, where they were talking about the Laker way and all that.
