Poll: Is Stern's prolonged presence in the media good for NBA?

Post#1 » by stan francisco » Fri Jun 16, 2017 5:30 pm

Discuss.

I know that his vanity and ego needs a fix, and his legacy. But I'm not sure, beyond his own interests, if David Stern is good for the actual NBA and its quest to move on.

I'm interested in finding out if any one thinks it's good that he lingers at the party.

Do you welcome his media presence or no? Good for NBA or no?

Doesn't seem like much to discuss here... Everything you said was overwhelmingly negative, there doesn't seem to be a counterpoint to any of this.

Got your point. Changed it. I'd love to hear one good reason from one fan. I'm curious to find out if there might be one.

Ehh not much of an impact IMO.

I think he could choose to have a positive impact, but he's not really doing that.

The little tidbits he's put out recently are good for a quick laugh, but I don't think they really affect anything today.

People that remember what happened, don't believe him

Stern, in general, saved the NBA. His quips in the media have no impact on that IMHO. Most very successful people have a difficult time leaving the source of their success.

For those who were not around the NBA in the 70's you may not know the massive uphill battle he had in getting the NBA ship righted. He inherited a huge mess and the game was dying. The Stanley Cup was being broadcast live most everywhere in those days.... the NBA finals were tape delayed until after the local news in 95% of the markets. The rise of basketball in Europe was largely because of it's rise in the US in the late 80's and early 90's. That was his central theme for the game back in those days. If the NBA hadn't turned around I'm not sure you'd have professional leagues in China, Israel, Turkey and now parts of Africa. Basketball is played in nearly as many places as Soccer. That wasn't the case 40 years ago.... not even close. He had a lot to do with that. Ex CEO's yap about what they did for years after they leave their companies. Bill Gates is still "asked" a lot for his opinion on technology yet he hasn't been in a position to innovate in the field for 30 years.
