The moment the league sent a memo that the salary cap projections were falling, Pelinka must have felt it was now or never to move one of the two bozos. I sure do hope they have a good line on who to use those max slots on.

Absolutely not, no way the Nets would take Randle/Moz/#28 just for capspace.

It has been said repeatedly in thread after thread on the T&T board that the Lakers would absolute not be able to unload Deng or Mozgov to the Nets for any combination of Clarkson/Randle/#28 and that it would take one of #2/Ingram/DLo to get the Nets to eat Deng's or Mozgov's contract. The fact that no team in the league was willing to take Deng or Mozgov for even the offer of an unprotected Lakers 1st reinforces that point.

At least the people responsible for the Deng and Mozgov contracts got fired.

If we had to give up Russell, we should have forced Deng on them.

I don't think anybody has posted this link. I wonder what lakers fans feel now

Magic Johnson was critical of D'Angelo Russell in his comments after the Los Angeles Lakers traded him to the Brooklyn Nets in a move that frees up cap space and makes it clear that Lonzo Ball will be their face of the franchise.

"I'm going to do what it takes to get the right players in here with the right mindset," Johnson said. "D'Angelo is an excellent player. He has the talent to be an All-Star. We want to thank him for what he did for us, but what I needed was a leader. I needed somebody also that can make the other players better, and also that players want to play with."

The Lakers drafted Russell with the second overall pick in the 2015 NBA draft, but used his potential to clear out Timofey Mozgov's contract while also acquiring Brook Lopez and the 27th overall pick.

This trade comes even better after hearing Magic Johnson's comments on Russell.

So your Benz ain't a Bentley; why trade it for a Buick.

I think DLo had more value in other GMs eyes than he did with Magic and Rob.
I think that because he was able to return a 1st, plus the ability to dump a terrible contract (Mozgov), and return a serviceable big in Lopez.
It also suggests that as good as he was scoring, he just wasn't the type of player that Luke and Magic wanted on this team.
This may end up being a great trade for both teams.
And for DLo too.
He's be the best player on the Nets from the get-go and can have free rein to do what he wants.
He will score a lot of points for them.

Because you were massively underwater on your loan.....

....well it also could be that everyone who has been in contact with Russell (Scott, Walton and now Magic) isn't seeing a franchise player. You'd have to pay him in 2 years or lose him. With Ball here he wasn't going to get the chance to be the "face" anymore. Solves an immediate problem and heads on another.

im just not sure how the lakers dont come out of this with #22 and #27 or the very least #22 and maybe levert in there as well. this trade could have been done and also been closer to fair value for LA
Looking back on now after the draft, the Lakers clearly got more than value. We took that pick and got a guy already better than Levert in Kuzma. Then to take the 28th pick and flip it to the Jazz for their 30 pick and got another player that will be a solid role player here for years was genius again by Pelinka and Magic. Bottom line ended up with 3 1st rounders and a quality 2nd round player in my mind was great work, while getting cap space and getting rid of a player that wasn't going to workout here anyway.
