Why would he bother meeting with the us if he's already made up his mind. Personally, I don't hold it against him. He went to OKC, formed a good relationship with Russ, decided he wanted to stay, and didn't drag his decision out by holding a bunch of pointless meetings. So it be it. We move on to the next one. It's just business, it's not an indictment against the Lakers.

I'm really happy we didn't waste a max contract on a glorified 3&D guy. He's not worth it. I'd rather have both Hart and Ingram, the second will be better than Paul George, IMO.

At the end of the season, you would have thought PG to LA was a sure thing. This throws a curveball in our plans. It almost feels like he was afraid of leaving Westbrook

Pivoting to LeBron/Kawhi and DMC was sure-fire sign that Maginka knew that PG is not gonna happen

I am fine with PG returning to OKC. We are still heading the right direction. A lot of flexibility and opportunity ahead in this and the next offseason
I have written the story line like this - we either only sign LBJ or sign no big FA this summer. Resign Randle and Brook. No matter what, absorb expiring contracts for assests (e.g. rookies with potential or future picks), then get into playoff this season with our young coure and win the series against OKC.
Again, I am absolutely Okay with PG's decision, it's his own life.

I'm not a big fan with the Lakers making it all about KL and and James. I'm wondering if PG felt like the third best looking girl at the party. Perhaps the Lakers thought he was in the bag?

Not even a meeting...this has been the case for a while now. I think PG didn't want to look magic in the face and tell him he ain't coming.

Oh well, time to move on.

The implications from this move is terrible for us. We'll either have to massively overpay for Kawhi, or wait one year since the Spurs will now feel empowered to trade him elsewhere.

I don't think this is true.

Melo was paid 9.1 mil by the Knicks the second he got traded as he had a clause in his contract that said he had a trade kicker of 15%. The hit for the actual 9mil he got paid was spread out over 2 years as a cap figure for this past season and the next. But he got paid 9 mil already

He also had his contract worded that his no trade clause would carry over to any team he’s traded to for the life of his contract. So they can ship him city to city but it doesn’t just go away like some other guys do.

So he had a lump sum trade kicker which is written so it gets smoothed over however many years he had left, an irrevocable ntc, 8% raises from bird rights. He also has the right to demand the majority of his salary which is 60% at the start of any season as his first payment on the year.

He bent Phil over the table hard out there. Bobby Marks broke down his deal when he got dealt to okc. His cap figure is higher than his actual salary

The 9 million was his trade kicker. His contract was not frontloaded. This year he is getting every penny of that 28 mil

Kblo I think you’re falling victim to the incorrect reporting of Melo’s contract at the time it was signed. NBA rules prevent teams from paying players a single penny on their contract prior to the season it is earned. However, the nba does allow teams to pay their player up to half their salary for that season at the start of that season. Kobe’s deal was like this.

When Melo signed his huge deal with the Knicks, people incorrectly reported that Melo would get half his contract up front at that moment he signed his deal. What the contract really said was that at the start of each season, he’d get half that season’s salary up front.

This. Posters on here sounding like jaded lovers. George made the decision he thought was best. Sucks that we missed out but it also shows that trading for a player on a one year contract isn't as risky as most people may think. This hurts our chances with LeBron but onto the next free agent.

I think we still land LeBron but magic is finding out that landing these free agents isn't as easy as it seems. The stars are lining up for magic because LeBrons kids are at a point where resources (big city) matters. Mitch and Jim didn't have such luck.

It’s the length of his contract that’s surprising. He had basketball and financial incentives to hit the market next or the following summer. But he’s tying his prime years to a small three of him, Russ and Adams, and a thin supporting cast because OKC will be capped out for the entirety of his contract!

That is what is truly surprising about this. Come December/January, he'll regret his decision.

Most people don't think PG is your typical max guy. In this market, yes, but he isn't a #1 player you build a team around. Even in this market over 25% on this board weren't in favor of giving him a max deal. That will probably work out in LALs favor over time as Ingram, Kuzma, and Ball come off of their rookie contracts.

Time to lock up this thread and stop talking about a loser who only wants to become westbrick's number 2...Glad he didn't come because he was not worth a max anyways...By the way...I voted for NO
