The plan has always been to wait to sign a second max player this coming offseason. Adding talent, not trading talent for talent.
That plan diverted when AD said he was interested in coming to LA. If they traded all for AD then they could have got a 3rd max agent in the offseason so they jumped at it.
That's really it though. Back to the original plan.
