This off-season will shape the future of the franchise for the next decade or so. Let's review some of the reasons why.
1) Address the coaching situation
Luke Walton has potential, he's young, he's a champion, he's a former Laker, and he's learned from HOF coaches at every level. The problem is, the coaches will always be the first to blamed. We all know Luke is Mitch's hire and Magic would like to bring in his own guy. However, does anyone exactly have confidence in Magic's ability to land a valuable coach? I don't know, (personally no). My guess, Mark Jackson will be our future head coach which is not ideal. There is a reason he hasn't been hired again in the league. However, a coaching change at least the assistant level will be addressed first.
2)Roster Construction
This roster failed. We can put blame on injury which is fine to an extent, but this roster wasn't built to win a championship in the first place. There are zero shooters on this team and the team has too many personalities. How Luke kept the locker room at ease is beyond me, he should get an extension for that deed alone. Sadly, i'm afraid Magic will use the excuse of injuries and he'll keep the same roster construction of next year.
3)Free Agents
If we don't sign another superstar, what do we do with our current cap space and future cap space? That may be the second biggest question of the off-season. No one is rumored to be interested in coming here and who is to blame them for that exactly. Will we risk trading all our assets (kids) for a rental of AD or another superstar? Of course, there is the route of signing second tier free agents. But at what point do we risky our future cap flexibility by signing Kemba to a max tier contract? Those are things we need to avoid. We don't need four year deals or even three years deals going to non A list players. That could get us in trouble this season.
4) Front Office
Magic has stated multiple times he will step down if he can't bring in a second superstar this summer. We can only pray he'll hold his word and won't qualify a Kemba or Nikola signing as "superstars". Our front office is one of the weakest in the league due to their inexperience. Hiring a former agent as a GM has worked in the past, but it appears Rob's relationships with other GM's and agents is sour.
5) Brandon Ingram Extension
Brandon is due for a rookie extension this fall. I don't expect the Lakers to do anything this year as we try to maintain flexibility towards the future. His game continues to grow as he gains more and more experience in the league.
