The next presidential election is nov-2020. Who knows what will happen. After all the 'rah rah rah' is over....folks tend to vote with their wallet. If the economy is good, a re-election is likely.....if not, then he'll prob get thrown out. I think the Dem primaries will be a good watch. The lid's off the box now, for president. Should be an interesting cast of characters fighting for a chance.

One nice thing I love about California: This state's spoken for. Republican's don't stand a chance, and they know it, and the Dem's know they just gotta throw token lip-service. So we don't get inundated with commercials. Im really glad about that. I'm usually beating my brains against the wall just listening to the local ads. Can't imagine what swing-states must have to deal with. I'm sure it's just brutal

The reason why GOP is funding a california split. The center of California is really the blue state. North and South actually have a slight red majority, hence the prop to break up Cali.

I think we have to break the brand loyalty to both parties if we want actual effective change. If you think about it the same thing that happens to fans of teams happens in politics where people forgive really awful things just because it's their "team".
Having political teams sucks and having only two really sucks. We need a way to get individuals with plans to actually improve things a fighting chance.

It really surprises me that I'm more right-wing than most people at least economically and even to some extent socially as well but whenever I talk to the so-called conservatives I see myself in the diametrically opposite side of the discussion. I feel looking at data and making decisions no matter how hard they are to live with is the most conservative thing ever yet the right wing of politics is so emotionally invested in certain things they believe in and no matter how much data you show them they don't seem to budge. Its this lack of flexibility in ideology that absolutely kills me.

For example, it makes all the financial sense in the world to not force a woman to have a child she is not financially able to take care of and she would rely on the state and welfare to provide for, so if your ideology is to reduce taxes and thereby cut welfare, restricting people's access to family planning makes not the tiniest sense in the world yet for the conservatives it is a die-hard issue.

having only two major parties isn't too bad, the part where it falls down is when both sides get so dug in and entrenched on opposite sides that they won't talk or work with each other. there's plenty of middle ground but nobody wants to go there

Clippers fans are a decent bunch of people, just a few tend to be incredibly annoying like the Clippers version of RingsDontLie.

I mean, you can't think the pro life movement is simply a financial discussion, right?

I think it's important to give the presidential election the respect it deserves no matter who was elected... The reality is, our president was voted for by a huge number of Americans... Simply calling them idiots for that decision, ignores the greater 'problem' if you see it as one. There was a reason he was chosen...
If it's a failure, it's a failure of all Americans... Not just "The Right"...
People need to also realize that there are mindless agendas on both sides... As soon as a person starts bitching about 'the right' it's a pretty clear indication they're just as entrenched and agenda-driven...
Example... People constantly ridiculing Fox News for being biased... Open your eyes. ALL News agencies are agenda driven at this point... For every mindless article on Fox defending Trump or attacking a Democrat, their's 10+from other agencies attacking trump or a Republican... And that actually may be a pretty good reason he was elected... People are tired of being told who the 'Smart, honorable Choice" is by people in LA, SF, Chicago or NY, who at best have no idea what they're dealing with and at worst don't respect them.
If you're from California, think about what it was like prior to Schwarzenegger... Do Dianne Feinstein, Barbara Boxer, and Jerry Brown really speak for all Californians? Arnold was a reaction exactly like Trump, to entrenched system-politicians losing touch with their electorate and speaking at them rather than for them.

Basically self righteousness on both sides, is turning political discourse in America into a clown show...

Since Slava is in my homeland of Denmark (not really, I've never been there but my DNA comes from there), I think I may have already shared this but we had a group of Engineers in from Copenhagen just before the election... All they wanted to do was talk about Trump and basically laugh at us about it. I tried to politely avoid the conversation, but they wouldn't stop... They thought since we were in Texas, we were all pro Trump, forgetting that Austin is more like San Francisco than Dallas...
Anyway, it made me think... What the **** gives people from other countries the right to judge our election, whoever we elect?
I mean, how'd that last Margarethe II election go for you, Denmark? Happy with that one? Because nobody, anywhere else give a **** who runs Denmark. (other than me because I actually care a little. :-) )

Point being, I think we all need to shut the **** up and listen to each other more... And maybe look in the mirror before we start bitching about "THEM" whoever we think they are.

Scandinavians, in general, have a holier than thou attitude and for a good reason, they are by far some of the most conscientious population I've been a part of. Still, it does sound a bit silly to mock America for Trump when the government here is in coalition with an extreme right-wing party called Dansk Folkeparti (Danish people's party). They even received 25% of the parliamentary representation and this was well before Trump even happened. However, even they told Bannon to go **** himself when he came calling to form an EU version of alt-right.

We'll all be speaking binary in half a century anyhow.

Isis, abortion, Trump, crazy pizza-shop conspiracies, taxes, healthcare.....none of this will matter. We'll still care about oil i guess, but that's about it. Maybe the hippy robots will run on solar, and lubricate with corn-oil or something.

Wow.... this thread circled back to it's title I see....

I'm old enough to have been on both sides of the so called political divide. Now I'm not invested in any of them.

I've also worked mining data (the company I worked for was a quant/data outsource for a number of government organizations and politicians and think tanks etc.) for both of the party's when while living in the DC area. What I've learned over the years is that what they say isn't what they do.... in fact they won't say what they intend to do. Too many people get caught up in what is said while never actually looking or understanding what they do. It's always playing off of one issue or another that can get the biggest emotional response. Politics has become fashion and groupthink.

These are the people that have us about $1.9M in debt (real debt+interest+unfunded mandates) per person in the US at the moment and are borrowing 3 dollars for every 5 they spend going forward. I don't remember any politicians on either supposed side saying this was their goal 35 years ago..... but it's what they did. This doesn't even count the State level debt+unfunded mandates or the private pension issues and personal debt. That's over 125 Trillion in some estimates when it's all totaled.... yet our money supply is less than 7 Trillion. All other issues are second to this one IMHO. If you can't be solvent as a society then the social issues mean nothing when it all falls apart.

Revolution would already be here if we were holding these branded bullies on both sides accountable for serving the people instead of their own selfish interest. People find so many distractions now that they just don't want to stand up to a broken system or even really know what candidates are all about if they aren't part of the two team stereotypical fodder where they have a home team and an enemy.
Honestly for all my opinions, I'm not much better, but I do know I want to be a champion of killing brand loyalty in politics so we do all have to assess the leader and not the party. Neither party are the balance of yin or yang, this is more like tweedle dee and tweedle dum.
