Coen Brothers movies top 5:
Oh Brother
Miller's Crossing
Big Lebowski
The Hudsucker Proxy
Raising Arizona/Barton Fink

No Country just seemed kind of pointless to me... What are you supposed to take away from that movie. It seemed to lack flow and just felt kind of awkward.
Burn after reading had it's moments but it just seemed a little forced and felt too long
I absolutely loved Fargo the first time I watched it. I've seen it a number of times since and it just isn't that engaging the second time.

As for Tarantino... I think the last time he was really serious about a movie was Pulp Fiction. That movie just hits on all points... Reservoir dogs just isn't that good a movie... It's lived on the residual hype after Pulp Fiction came out for years. I own both of them. I like them both but RD just isn't in the same ball park as Pulp.

Pulp
Natural Born Killers
Kill Bill 1
Kill Bill 2
Death Proof
Never have rice at Hanzo's house...

I think top 5 in every category is better.

For example
Animation
Comedy
Action
Horror
Western

Yeah, that's my caveat... I got kids, I haven't seen it yet. I've got high expectations though. But I did for No Country too though...

I appreciate Tarantino's characters.

I think I'm one of the few who enjoys RD more than PF.

Have you read the novel? One of McCarthy's best.
Novels dont usually go well into motion pictures.

Another one is the Road. Great Novel, bad movie.
Heard they were making a great Gatsby remake.

A top 5 list would be super difficult, even for each of those buckets... I think it might end up being kind of pointless.

Much easier to go by director like I did.

I will say though that Heath Ledger's performance as the Joker is one of the best acting performances, I've ever seen. I wouldn't put Dark Knight in any top 5 list though.

what do you mean? no country to me is like modern western. i think it's actually a pretty complex movie and you could take a number of themes away from it. at its core you could look at in sort of an existentialist sort of view in that no matter what you do in life, you are going to die, and there is no real meaning to be had. actually thats probably more nihilistic but i dont think its that dark. and to me bardem's character represents death (i feel like this is obvious no?). i also feel like theres is a constant battle between life and death between moss and bardem that has a deeper meaning, sort of like the struggle to survive. i dont know ive only watched it 2-3 times and im not even sure thats enough to fully grasp all the themes of the film.

one thing is for sure, the films is beautifully shot and i personally think its one of the best book adaptations ever.

i mean just look at how bardem is shot and how just by looking at pictures you can tell he is evil.

even if you dont appreciate the story and themes you have to appreciate how nice the film looks.

It's a very pretty movie. The cinematography is gorgeous. I didn't think the character development was there.

Bardem was evil. There was never any question. But he also seemed to have a human side, which was confusing at times. And the other characters were the same. I couldn't bring myself to 'root' for any of them. Just when I thought I could, they'd do something that made me pull away from them.
It's similar to how I felt about the Ladykillers. Interesting story, good acting, but just couldn't get behind any of them.

I haven't read the book. Maybe that's why you like the movie so much. I've done that too.

i dont feel like i have to root for any of the characters to enjoy a movie. i felt moss was relate-able enough and so was wells. to me moss represents more of the good but he also represents more people in general and bardem represents the ever present death that hangs over us. all throughout the film moss is dodging bardem trying to stay alive, and his struggle represents the human struggle of survival. in the end you cant avoid death no matter how noble you are or what youve done.

The point of Chigurh's character was to show the embodiment of pure evil. He had no emotion. He was very calculating in all manners.

yeah i agree. in fact i was reading where someone said that Chigurh literally is death, like the grim reaper. his hair like that is supposed to resemble a hood and he wears black throughout pretty much the whole movie. interesting take on it for sure.
