I'm certain that the plan has always been to play Payne. You knew from the moment they traded a lottery protected first for him that Flip thought he had found an undervalued asset, and for what it's worth he was actually good in college. He was supposed to be a floor spacing shot blocker (kind of like Ibaka actually) coming out of college. In the NBA, he has become a mid range jump shooting defensive sieve, but the Wolves can't exactly get their pick back and need something to show for the trade.
