Pennsyltucky happened. Nothing says, "this is what racial tensions were like in the late 80s/early 90s" like growing up in an area still living through the racial tensions of the 80s/90s. I grew up in part of the bible belt, but not located in the bible belt.
Probably should blame the Amish for slowing down the area.
Two things.
What the hell is the bible belt
MFW Racial tensions in Pittsburgh compared to other areas.
google bible belt. least US immigrants and 99% of counties are southern baptist.
that's not Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh is extremely forward thinking, very green, friendly, walker/biker friendly (weather permit), etc... It's almost an east coast portland, minus the hipsters with a lot more college students. I grew up in York County PA. About 10-15 minutes above the mason dixon line. 2/3 of york county is called, "Southern York County" for a reason. Also, fun fact, York city is a very dangerous U.S. city per capita and it's a barely a city. The area has a lot of Baltimore commuters from the housing boom. The influx of total population was astounding and seemed to happen over night... traffic issues everywhere because the area couldn't handle the volume. It has now benefited from the extra income and I think is starting to progress as youth grow up without the stereotypical influences that were unavoidable in my life. I had great parents that raised me well (my mom kept me very open minded and left wing grounded) and I'm happy to be out of the area, but miss my family.
I'll admit, I was thrown the first time i saw a baby blue bandanna that didn't even come off for gym class. Took two weeks (no lie) before the administration realized what all the colored bandannas meant.
