Thanks for this write-up Dock, it's really cleared up a lot of my questions for this upcoming season. Do you have any info on how insurance on players would be affected by how much they play this upcoming season? For example regarding Kobe's salary would the Lakers only be off the hook if he didn't play any games next season or do they get a partial payment if he only plays half?

Depending on whether Dwight resigns and how Kobe's health goes does anyone else see a scenario where the Lakers do this?
1. Trade Gasol for young players or picks
2. Amnesty Metta
3. Try and keep Kobe out the full year like Rose to get the insurance to pay for his salary.
4. If Dwight doesn't resign then tank for a high lottery pick.

i think this part would address your question:

http://www.cbafaq.com/salarycap.htm#Q71

If an insured player is disabled, there is a 41 game waiting period, after which the insurance company pays 80% of the guaranteed portion of the player's remaining base salary, up to $175,000 per regular season game. The waiting period can span seasons, and the player even can attempt to come back -- if he does and finds that he is unable to play, the 41-game count resumes (as long as he stopped playing due to the same injury).

kobe's 41 game count already started (he missed 2 regular season games right?). the most interesting part is the "up to $175,000 per regular season game". kobe makes over $365,000 a game. if 39 games into next season kobe is still out (2 games this yr + 39 next), the insurance company starts kicking in 175k for each of the 43 remaining games, which puts the insurance company on the hook for only about 7.5 mil of kobe's 30 mil salary.

Lol.....man this is getting utterly redundant, Kobe ISN'T getting amnestied. Unless it's pretty clear and evident he's going to miss the entire 13-14 season. Furthermore it only leaves 3 guys, and two of them getting amnestied isn't really going to save them all that much. That leaves only Pau with the decision they have to wrestle with.

Pau is at $19,285,850 mil next season, that's what is going to be erased. Total salary so far for 13-14 is $ 77,631,035, but that's with 6 spots open. We're most likely going to come close to 95 mil if they spend to really rebuild this team.

I'm thinking we amnesty Gasol as well--especially if D'Antoni is still the coach and Clark re-signs. However, hopefully we can trade him for 2 or 3 solid bench players and use the amnesty on MWP.

I suggested that Kobe Bryant should be amnestied, and they locked the thread, so I be careful what you say. It appears that they don't like diverse opinions in here

We need Pau, we cannot just win with Dwight, whatever condition Kobe is left in and a visibly gimpy Nash. The plan was to try for another season and let the pieces fall for 2014, so I hope they keep Pau because we do not get any equal return for him that would still put us in a good position for next season.

May be Dallas might entertain a trade around Marion.

Bottomline, we should be able to get some return for Pau, even if it means picks in 2020, there's gotta be some value.

Yeah, that's it--not because there was this thread already open.

Slava......Pau is the enigma that's haunting this team. 3 bad playoffs and he's clearly losing skill to his game. So the bottom line is this.....the fan base is split on him needing to stay or go, and the franchise has tried to trade him once before. If we amnesty him we still have to replace him, and that's why I agree with a portion of your last quote on not getting any equal return. Mitch and Jim gonna have a lot of sleepless nights from here until July. Believe that.

Good work Dock. That stuff makes my eyes water, but it's important.

I'd prefer to move Pau as he's the only real asset we have at this point. But if not, that salary is a killer -- especially considering we've struggled so badly to integrate him next to Howard. Metta just seems like a bug on the windshield in comparison.

We're not going to amnesty Kobe, but if he doesn't take a big cut when his contract is up, I'd let him go too. It's not a matter of what he deserves -- he's probably underpaid, even right now -- but that's a massive wad of cash that severely handcuffs us.

I wouldn't be surprised if there's a clause in the tv deal centered around keeping Kobe as long as possible.

Lets face it, that tv deal would not be possible without him.

pau's getting traded, not amnestied.

there's value to be had from trading pau. there's none from trading MWP.

MWP will get amnestied. Pau will likely be shopped for picks right before the draft.

gotta be Metta. Pau at least has something left in him. him scoring at the 10-15 range and passing could still benefit this team. MWP, you're a warrior for playing with that busted knee but I think it's time.

Gasol will be traded for youth before he gets amnestied. So it would not surprise me one bit if we see Gasol get traded and Metta being amnestied.

If Metta opts out and agrees to a 2m-3m deal to come off the bench, I can see him staying easily. Hell worst case scenario he's a starting stretch 4 in this league as he showed wi Pau hurt when he was guarding Zach, Boozer, Blake, and the like one on one while giving Dwight space.

In fact I hope Pau is traded for perimeter talent.

Blake had a solid run but he's been hurt or underproduced grossly most his stay here so I could see him hit with the amnesty if Metta opts out

who would opt out of 8 million to go down to 2? Even I doubt that MWP is that nuts.

i don't understand why he would opt out either. i've read some people say that they'd want the lakers to sign him for multiple yrs at 3 mil if he opts out, but i wouldn't want the lakers committed to him for even a penny after next season. clearing his salary off completely by summer of 2014 is more important than a few savings this yr and still having him on the cap for a yr or two after.

Yeah, I wouldn't want him and his 2 inch vertical anywhere near the team either but I pointed out that 3/9mil is the best case scenario he can even hope for at which opting out would make sense. His agent would obviously lose all clients if Metta opts out for anything less and leaves the guaranteed money.

The thing is he would opt out as he once said to retire here and stay in the LA community. He seems to like the place where Metta isn't considered weird because its just LA.

I wouldn't mind him at a 3yr 8M type of deal. Like I said, best case at least we have a swing backup in place behind Kobe which is more than he had the post two years. At worst case, Metta and his limited vertical can start at 4 in this league. H started when Pau went down and was guarding Randolph, Dirk, Aldridge, Blake, etc one on one better than Pau or Clark or Jamsion could. His shot while bad at SF is good enough to be a stretch 4. His rebounding isn't terrible when you see he keeps PFs off the glass by boxing out. And guys with his body build usually move over to the 4 as they age, like Anthony Mason, Horry, Kukoc, etc.

not the same. its a gentleman's agreement between management and MWP.

opt out now (7.7 mil), agree to EXTEND for 2 yrs 2mil per

add it up, 11.7 mil over 3 years is a lot softer on the LT bill (first year 3.2 mil) than 7.7 mil
