kobe won't get mvp, regardless of wins or losses.

The media votes for MVP. Guess who's NOT the media darling.

The MVP is a popularity contest with votes cast by mostly Kobe-haters.

Except for Ric Bucher, he's going to vote for Kobe twice.

I went back and forth mentally with myself over who had become more valuable to this team. Maybe I'm asking a different question than who is the MVP of the Lakers. I'm asking; who do the Lakers need more to win, Bynum or Bryant?

When Bynum has dominate games in the playoffs, make this thread. When Bynum carries a team for stretches, then makes this thread. When Bynum inspires debates about whether he's the best player in the game and were he ranks all time, then make this thread.

Not now, its Bryant.

My goodness do not only non Lakers fans but many Lakers fans take Kobe Bryant for granted. Like Clyde Drexler was once said "Kobe is the most underrated player in NBA history". If ones knows basketball, ones know how vital Kobe is to the Los Angeles Lakers. Andrew Bynum is a up and coming force but that would be happening without Kobe Bryant drawing endless amounts of attention away from him.

I think most Laker fans fully appreciate Kobe.

Only a few try to keep cutting down his importance to L.A. and the game.

Some pretty sensitive people here. I didn't once diminish Kobe's importance to the Lakers. It's pretty clear the Lakers aren't going anywhere without both Kobe and Bynum in the line-up. Is it such an unreasonable query to wonder about Bynum possibly being more important to day-to-day winning? There's truth to the adage that "a good big man is better than a good little man." Kobe's the best perimeter defensive player the Lakers have, but his perimeter defense didn't prevent the Sonics from getting 56 points in the paint. Kobe's a great shooter, but I'd rather have Bynum take a shot than Kobe. Bynum hits 20% more of the shots he takes, will rebound a high percentage of his misses, and his misses don't generally lead to a fast break opportunity for the other team. None of this is a knock on Kobe, they're different players with different skill-sets, playing at entirely different positions. I don't care if you agree or disagree, just don't tell me I can't even ask the question.

Kobe is the best player in the world, Andrew Bynum is our next franchise player.

This is really extreme, but I think a decent analogy would be- the Lakers without Kobe would be like how the t-wolves are without an elite guard. Bynum in the future will probably put up the big dominant numbers like big Al, but there would be nobody to steer the ship. Obviously, our record wouldn't be as awful as theirs but, we'd still be a subplayoff team in the west. Or even this years Clippers with Kaman is a good example too.

On a side note, from what I've seen from Bynum in the last month I really think he's going to be the best center in the league in the next few years. It was amazing to see how he evolved from the beginning of the year to this month. He went from just getting mostly offensive rebounds and alley-oops to showing us he has a full repetoire of excellent footwork and postgame.

You need at least two stars to win rings. Having them both is necessary for the Lakers to be a contender.

Bynum is the reason this team went from mediocre to potentially a dominant team capable of winning close to 60 games. Without him,now we are struggling with teams like Memphis and Seattle.

I think Bynum impacts the game more on the defensive end and on the offensive end he provides more high percentage offense.

lol, all comes full circle. kobe was being argued as more important than shaq when he clearly wasn't. now its happening to kobe with bynum's emergence.

Yes, that would lead us to OJ Mayo.

I think for the future Bynum is though. Bynum could play 18 more years although Kobe could easily go another 12. Imagine they had Butler. They would have the best starting lineup in the history of the league in 09 when Bynum is truely a Beast and a 24 and 13 guy.
