Suspensions are decided by Stern and Jackson, but they are based on precedence and we have over a decade of precedence on this rule that says, 1 game for a missed elbow, 2 games for contact above the shoulders with an elbow. In the brawl at the palace, there was no precedence (at least to my knowledge) nor was there for Spreewell's coach choke, or Arenas and Critterton bringing guns into the locker room. Stern was free to do whatever he wanted with those suspensions without worry, similar to the NO Saints penalties.

So what do you do with Artest, who can prove that other players have done the same thing (malicious intent, severe contact)? You could suspend him for 2 games plus whatever Harden is out for, which looks like it will be the regular season but should be good to go for the playoffs, but that sets up an unfair rule that says it's okay to elbow a guy in the face so long as he doesn't die or get paralyzed.

Artest is going to get more than 2 games, I think 3-5, and that will set a new precedent, that the NBA will have to detail in great length when it issues the suspension and from here forward, they must feel confident in that precedent. Most likely there will be a new stipulation, in precedent, not written in the rules, that says that if a player causes excessive injury to another player by result of said infraction, the penalty shall be increased to "such and such". The rules say that Stern can do whatever he wants and he can, but it would be appealed based on the precedent of this foul and a decade worth of suspensions that were 1 game for attempt and 2 games for contact.

At some point, maybe in the offseason, the NBA would have to look at including such writing into the actual rules of the NBA, that detailed the type of "excessive injury" and the correct penalties for such.

Stupid theory. If Lakers played tomorrow, they would have made a decision already.

If Lakers didn't play until the start of the playoffs, they can take as long as they want.

I'm sorry, but MWP needs to be suspended for the rest of the season. If his actions were unintentional, why didn't he immediately turn back to see what happened and walk over to check on Harden? Bottom line...MWP is a thug. I hope the Lakers part ways somehow with this guy before next season.

As for those of you who are saying Harden should not have gotten up in his grill? What are you...nuts? That's part of the game. Under no circumstances should a player get hammered in the head for doing that.

Finally a rational non-Laker fan... I completely agree... 1 more game seems very fair and sends the proper message.

So #BruceBowen thinks Ron should be suspended 10games, that's coming from a guy that use to stick his foot under ... http://tmi.me/oRP3r

If they do that, I'm hoping it would be 5 games for playoffs and 5 games for regular season.

Barnes is right, Bowen has no place to talk. A dude who was constantly, intentionally trying to sprain ankles, at best, shouldn't be suggesting punishment for an aggressive act.

I love when these guys retire, they suddenly evolve into this clean slate goody goody :nonono:
2014: Randle / Clarkson
2015: Russell / Nance
2016: Ingram / Zubac
2017: Top 3 Pick? Fultz, Ball or Bust

They are waiting to see if Harden plays. If Harden doesn't miss the next OKC game you can bet Peace gets 5 games or less.

I think listing Harden as "Day to Day" is gamesmanship by OKC...
Either the doc that cleared him to play the rest of the game is a complete quack and should be fired, or OKC is playing us for a longer suspension.
If he's hurt, I hope he get's better quick... But I just have that feeling.

I mean, SA already sewed up #1 seed, why not let him rest?

I don't think MWP's intent was to elbow Harden in the back of the head, it all happened so quick. My guess is that it was really bad luck that he ended up striking Harden in the head, of course if you carelessly swing your elbows when other players are around, it's pretty obvious that can happen. So stupid stupid stupid on MWP, and obviously some sort of suspension is deserved.

At the same time, I didn't really see Harden doing a whole heck of a lot to have instigated it. Players walk/bump past each other all the time on the inbounds after a score. PG's routinely walk to the spot where Harden was heading- near the baseline outside of the paint- to receive the inbounds pass. Maybe he also wanted to get in MWP's face a bit, but he didn't push him or anything like that and didn't appear to say anything. So I don't think there was anything really premeditated on his part either.

If it's anyone besides MWP who dunked that ball and then turned around to go back upcourt, this would have never happened and no one would have looked twice at Harden during that sequence.

Lakers just scored.
The ball was on it's way to the ref for OKC's inbound play.
The Lakers including Ron were on their way down the court to get back on D. They weren't setting up for full court D.
Harden saw Ron celebrating and came across the court to intercept him>

Why? It's like he thought it was Lakers ball or something.
Harden should have been getting open. Not going out of his way to cover MWP for his own team's inbound pass.

The only reason for it, and it's a pretty common thing for Harden, is that he was trying to draw a foul from MWP during his celebration...

Well, he did.

They are still playing for home court vs miami/chicago. If they want to jeapordize that to get ron artest suspended more games in the first round, they aren't making a good basketball decision.

I'm wondering if it behooves the Thunder to play Harden at all, or if it's win-win for them to keep him out and try to increase MWP's penalty that way. You can't really say how he really feels and it's a error on the side of caution injury, but again we're back to 'would Harden and the Thunder use this tactic for competitive advantage in the playoffs?'

I think they would... I think teams play for advantages in their conference... I don't think they worry too much about the Finals because so much can happen by then and that environment diminishes home-court advantages to an extent...

You can't say it any better than that. Harden has been rewarded in the past for flopping and drawing such fouls. He wanted to take away the Lakers momentum and well he did.

It is 4:14pm EST and yet no decision on Artest from Stern....this is not good news...normally a decision would've been made already...doesn't look good for Ron.

Man I got a bad feeling about this...Something is telling me with the way Ron has been getting killed in the media regarding the elbow, Stern is gonna give him something crazy...

Its a shame considering it might have been his best stretch of basketball as a Laker.
I don't no about anyone else either but, I really dont feel confident getting past the 2nd round without Ron. Especially against Okc
