You know that tired old narrative about how Americans will never watch soccer, how they find it dull and incomprehensible and prefer homegrown sports? It's finally, definitively dead.

According to the overnight TV ratings, Sunday's thrilling USA v Portugal game won more than 25 million viewers in the U.S. — despite the fact that it was only to be found on cable networks ESPN and Univision. Not only was that an all-time record for a soccer match, it also beat the average viewership for the 2013 World Series by 10 million viewers.
But don't feel too bad, baseball: basketball is in the same position. This year's NBA finals, featuring the Miami Heat and the victorious San Antonio Spurs, could only muster an average 15.5 million viewers.

The USA-Portugal match was seen by 18.2 million viewers on ESPN alone, not counting the half-million online customers who live streamed the game. Another 6.5 million viewers caught the game on Spanish-language channel Univision.
None of this, of course, counts the vast audiences that clustered together in bars and big screen events in major US cities, such as the crowds in Grant Park, Chicago and Civic Center, San Francisco.

Indeed, it seems an event long predicted — that eventually, with demographic shifts and changes in attitude, a generation of Americans would stop growing out of soccer when they left the little leagues — has finally come to pass.

I really hope so. I can only imagine the talent they could put together if some of the best athletes played the game.

BTW Go Mexico!!!

that's good for soccer but i wouldn't hold my breath on that last paragraph

turns out there was record ratings here for the last world cup as well, and they said the same thing then
http://content.time.com/time/specials/p ... 68,00.html

there might be a few more people at the margin who become more interested in soccer because of this but the nation isn't going to become soccer fans en masse. its like the olympics everyone gets the fever because of the nature of the event but once its over the majority aren't going to care again for another 4 years

when the time comes that you need to get a prostate exam, would you rather be examined by a male or a female doctor?

For the first time in my life I actually started to go beyond tolerate and even enjoy wine. I finished 4 bottles over the past month all $6 wines from the local Randalls. My persian ex would be proud now, that female tried hard to get me into red wine.

Move up the price range to the $12 ot $15 area and explore California Red Zinfandels...
Lots there to love for reasonable money. But like any wine, there will be some you'll absolutely hate too...

The ones I've been drinking are pinot noir. I want to stick to red wine mainly because my ex told me its great for the skin. I guess that's why Persians have flawless skin.

Well that's awkward I was talking about Persian women. The Persian men I've encountered mostly have oily skin and smell.
