Key question: same songs with the two different producers? Did your friend already contribute with solid changes on these songs? Offer him co-writer, co-producer or co-arranger credit, or what ever is appropriate for each song, and explain that you have to exhaust this option. If you should go ahead without him, to produce the same songs with someone else, be very careful not to use any of his ideas (if there are any that you'd like to keep). I'd probably let the new guy come up with something else, and give him the exact same demos that you delivered to guy one, to make it fair. If your buddy made a substantial contribution on a song and you still miss it at the end of it all with the new guy, incorporate it and give him the appropriate credit.

If you're working on different songs altogether with guy number two, then it's a different ball game. Tell guy number one that you want to work with him again as soon as he's finished with what isn't completed, and in the mean time, you have to go make another record with someone else. If he's a good friend, he should understand that you have to bust a move while he's smoking herb and not holding up his end on your "old" project. He knows he hasn't delivered.

I'm guessing the same-songs-scenario is what's going on, right?

EDIT: Read your post again. Was the album his idea, you say? Did he come up with the concept? Did he write anything?

He's got zero creative input. I wrote a song and told him I was considering making it a concept album. When I gave up on it, he said "write that album and I'll produce it for you".

I might even use him as the drummer on the album. He loves the work by the second producer and surely knows he's the best around because he considered recording his own band with him.

I paid up front because a- he needed money to move to LA b- because of his need and my ability to pay up front I got a half off deal. He's a really good friend so it will be ok.

I'm starting with Castaway tonight. I know there's more to a studio than gear listings and you might even work in a nicer studio, but let me know what you think about this place:

no worries at all double E.

It was great.
I like the scratch tracks even. We did a live whole album take with 3 retakes total on 2 songs. Good energy great room for me and he knows about how to engineer on the level of how many hertz in an Am and what part of the eq that automatically means should be adjusted to make it sweet. His mic'ing was great and allowed for both an amazing amount of separation between the live guitar and voice and also to mic the guitar perfectly for my thumpy attack. Rad overall.

Plus there's been instant word of mouth over the project with the area musicians which has garnered all kinds of instant respect means many choices for studio cats. Rad.

danny , i still have some contacts at paramount/encore/ameraycan...if you need studio time down in hollywood, i might be able to rig something up for ya...

also, there was this studio up in santa barbara, i forget the name, but it had the most beautiful neve 8068 i had ever seen...i was doing some microphone work for a producer that used it alot, these days studio time should be real cheap, especially if you have an engineer already...

btw, do you have an ftp site or anything where i could listen to yr stuff?

Hey thanks. I'm always into trying different places. At the moment the 3 different studios are keeping me busy, but I'll finish up with them by end of summer.

Yeah you can hear some tracks on my myspace. Of the track listings:

Darlene and One Crow are the new live scratch takes from the studio I'm all about right now.

I home studio engineered Avg Savage and I'm Not Afraid

5th of July is done at Red Barn with Shades of Day.

So I told off my boss today. Told him I quit and was giving him 2 weeks notice. He got pissed and told me he's going over to the office and will take over for the day.

When he came in, he offer me a new job and I got my raise. Life is getting better.

Yeah, though my old house burnt according to the damage map. It's got a lot of mountain before it reaches Ojai right now.

Worse for me is that Ojai is crazy after some 14year old gangster killed a 16year old alleged supremacist with notorious biker ties. I got harassed by the extra cop force in town for looking like a dangerous biker. jeesh. My neighborhood is the one under siege right now. The murder was a couple blocks away. Here I am the dangerous looking white guy with blackxican girlfriend. It's a no win situation for me. The latin gangs think I'm a biker, the cops think I'm a biker, and the supremacist hate me.

Stupid kids making stupid adults crazy.
