Re: CT LIX: Return of the Megathread
These new tires I installed are so light. They also grip so well to the ground that I felt like I was going easier uphill. They're also puncture resistant which is a big plus. They're continental gator skin tires.

What I learned today is that Ty has a real thing for bike tires...
I have gatorskin tubulars on my road bike. They're pretty awesome just because they're so durable. But the Vittoria silks I had on before were heaven... $70 a tire is asinine though and I never could get the hang of repairing tubular tires.

I love shooting my slime inside the inner tubes. Gives you added confidence to have that extra layer of protection for rough rides in the future.

Re: CT LIX: Return of the Megathread
I had a front tire let go on a downhill in a catastrophic way with slime in it... Took a full load in the face. I hate slime...
Wait... What were we talking about?

Did it make the wheel heavy and uneven? Sounds scary, if true.

Re: CT LIX: Return of the Megathread
No... No warning really. I just started a decent at the end of the ride and it blew. It actually wasn't slime it was stans, but basically the same thing... I actually didn't know the tire let go until I figured out what had sprayed me. Not sure how I kept the bike up to the bottom... I was actually pretty close to my car so I just road it back. One of the few benefits of tubular tires.

The ones I bought were 40 a tire and only because I got a discount. they're usually around 50.
Yesterday i learned to change the tires and inner tubes myself. Surprisingly its pretty easy. All you need is bike levers.

Didn't know about tubulars. Apparently they are obsolete now a days.

Re: CT LIX: Return of the Megathread
That's the most one sided list possible. All the best racers on and off road, and all the most successful triathletes still use tubulars.
Everything on that list may be true for equal price tubulars to clinchers, but the best tubular tires are nutty expensive. And higher rolling resistance is absolutely false.
Of course the glue needs to dry... That's just dumb.
Riding on good tubulars is sublime. You have a smoother, faster ride, and have much more feel for the bike and the road.
But good tubulars are a little more expensive than good clinchers (although the price of good clinchers are getting pretty high these days), they are harder to repair, and gluing them is a bit of a hassle. You carry a complete, pre-glued tubular or 2 with you for flats, you rip off the old one and pop the new one on, between the pressure of the air and the glue, I've never had one even seem like it was going to come off in a corner.

i try. i've been out backpacking a handful of times since the start of last summer and switched over to taking whiskey during the winter trips (my last trip was 3 days, last weekend in january, i'll post pictures sometime if we're not facebook friends. camped in what was easily 2 feet of standing snow 1.5 miles into the woods and hit some trails during the days - **** frigid).
I've also taken to whiskey night caps on business trips with co-workers, but I just am not a fan of liquor straight (beer tastes great!). I tend to stick to gin because the tastes vary so much and it makes a great mixer for multiple cocktails.

Bourbon is far more smoother and tastier than the average whiskey and its great to drink straight. If you like cocktails Gin & Vodka are tops ofcourse. I used to hate drinking liquor straight but I guess age improved my taste buds.

Re: CT LIX: Return of the Megathread
Speaking of tires. I noticed my front tire was a bit wobbly. I thought it was the release leve that was loose, but it ended up being a nut on the rim.
