i would hate to be a surgeon as it is. Needing to have perfect precision, perfect concentration. Certain surgeries can take almost a full day with minimal breaks. Its insane.

unless of course there are apps that will help in such an exercise.

monitoring patients BP/HR, sensors that can identify certain important organs/arteries, apps that remind you to collect every piece of surgical instrument before sewing up the patient

Yes, but then, why not make a specialized device for that? They already pretty much do for everything in the operating room.
It's not worth the risk to bring a non-medical device into that environment. Especially one that flashes information into your eyes while you're doing stuff.

if the google glass performs those functions and replaces a bunch of equipment, what stops it from being classified as a medical device?

Materials and certifications... And money probably.

They have glasses with cameras in them for surgery and I think Google is actually creating versions specifically for the medical world.

My point got a little confused in all this. That being that the current consumer version of Google Glass seems pretty useless and just a source of distraction.

Of course parts of the technology is useful, but those parts like heads up display on 'glasses' and a camera in the frames have been around for ever.

I've been thinking about doing more reading in my free time (mostly right before I go to bed). Can you guys recommend some good sports memoirs or biographies, particularly those that focus on leadership and/or personal development?

Right now I'm thinking about placing a order for Eleven Rings...

cool. our national team will be going up against Kawhi Leaonard, Kyle Lowry, Blake Griffin, Demar Derozan, Paul Pierce, Damian Lillard, and this Nick Johnson kid, before flying to participate in the FIBA Asia Cup in July, then FIBA World in August, and Asian Games in September.

man, talk about rest vs rust.

its called augmented reality and i really do think its the future.

the applications are endless really. its like asking why do we need smart phones ~8 years ago; it makes everything easier, more convenient and more accessible. thats how technology works (obviously), eventually we will have implants and wont even need physical tools like phones/google glass.

personally i think the only problem with technology like this is it makes us far too distant socially. ever been out at a restaurant and seen (or maybe had) multiple people sitting at the same table, everyone on their phones? its like a huge problem with my generation and the one growing up right now, people dont know how to function without their phones/laptop/tech. i **** will sit right next to one of my friends and they will completely ignore me and be 100% engaged in whatever they are doing on their phone. i do it a lot too even though i try to restrain myself. my dad always points it out and is fascinated by it too, thinks its all really bad for society.

theres this spike jonze movie called Her that addresses a lot of this, really worth watching.

just wait until this tech becomes so ingrained that people who participate in riots are singled out because they know your gps location and timestamps due to your glasses

Taking your google glass to a riot would be as stupid as checking in on facebook at a store while burglarizing it.

Well there's several social, emotional, and philosophical... As well as probably a couple moral.... Discussions that could be had about augmented reality as a way of life... But that's probably several discussions for other days...

And as it's used today... That being sort of a goof and maybe a little bit of a technological escape, I don't really have a problem with. It's fine to fart around with new toys.

What I have a problem with is that I don't feel the technology, as it stands today is ready to be marketed as any sort of 'augmented reality.' The google glass interface is too clunky and doesn't integrate well with you or your surroundings, so I believe all it does is create a distraction. Like I think you said it's like wearing your phone... Which is not a recipe for a successful 'augmented reality' approach. It was just a progression from those geeks making headgear to mount their phones on.

True augmented reality's initial purpose will be to enhance out interaction with the reality around us... It will first improve our senses so that we can perceive more of our environment. Not just allow us to download Game of Thrones on the way to work. Or flash the price of the gadget we're looking at in our left eye while we're trying to diffuse the bomb that will destroy the human race in 6 seconds.
Don't ask me how I know...

Google class prototype that they are selling now is not a good design. They signed a deal with Luxotica, the makers for Ray Ban and Oakley to design the next generation, which I think is going to be where the google glass craze would start unless apple trumps them with something sooner.
