Mixtapes are usually free. Datpiff is a good site for all official mixtapes that come out.

Okay so I have a dumb question. Are mixtapes free? I know you can download them but is the artist expecting to make money on them. I know mixtapes are a big thing on the east coast but thats not really a westcoast thing. Or maybe times have changed.

The last time I paid for music was in 1998 at The Wherehouse (which has been out of business for years now.)

Yeah Im fully aware that you can get music illegally. My question was are mixtapes acually sold or are they givin away by the artist. For instance, I heard that Ludacris released his last mixtape out for fee. Not sure if true though.

oh yeah his mixtape is free, you can go to datpiff and dl it. mixtapes are usually let out by the artist, if the artists wants you to pay for the music then you'll be directed to the artist's bandcamp (a site where artists well music) and can buy it there. or you can wait until someone else buys it and uploads it and get it for free. but for the most part mixtapes are free.

Depends on the venue and who the artist is. If the artist is popular and you want to sell it in a store, then there's a cost that usually just covers the expense and marketing side.

But if the artist is trying to get more exposure, then the mixtapes are usually free. Most of the time, mixtapes are meant for promotional purposes.

These days, you can market your music online through youtube, soundcloud, etc.
