Los Angeles Lakers guard Darius Morris says Kobe Bryant used a business analogy to motivate him this year.
At his exit interview with the LA media today, Morris said he sat next to Kobe all year on the team plane and gleaned a lot of knowledge from him.

As Mike Trudell of Time Warner SportsNet reports, Kobe told Morris an anecdote about Nike and Lululemon during a particular rough patch.

When Morris was out of the rotation, Kobe told him that while Lululemon gained market share in the women's clothing market, Nike always kept the big picture in mind.

From Trudell, "But the point, to Morris, was no matter what happens within a practice, a game, a season ... always focus on the big picture."
...Nike has built a formidable women's yoga line, and they're well-positioned to take over any ground Lululemon gives up in the next few months.

But the more general point is that Morris shouldn't question himself and change what he does every time a new challenge emerges.

Or just answer the questions... And then do whatever the hell you want. It really couldn't hurt his rep any more than just saying, "I'm not going to answer that question because this is my decision and it affects nobody but me." He just comes off like a complete, self-centered, oblivious, tool... Especially when Mitch explains how the time-line can handcuff the team if he waits...

Something else I thought was interesting in retrospect...

When asked if Mitch had talked with Kobe about retirement and whether the injury has changed his plans of only playing another year or so, Mitch said; "Well his contract is up after a year." Or something like that...
He went on to say that he expected Kobe to be back but he didn't know with what kind of abilities, and he said it didn't make sense to talk about any more than one more year as far as a contract goes.

I'm paraphrasing all that and running on the ragged edge of taking it out of context but I think it captures what he said.

He went on to say that given the season they had, the realities of the CBA, and their desire to field the best team possible, that; "Everyone is in play."

In the past, Mitch has said something like "Everyone except Kobe obviously, would be in play." I thought it was interesting that he seemed to be putting Kobe out there.
I didn't think he was talking about trading Kobe, but it kind of felt like Amnestying him wasn't out of the question.

That doesn't make a lot of sense to me but this all came up in the midst of a lot of amnesty questions from reporters.

Amnestying just doesn't make sense to me. My gut tells me they've already talked to Kobe about an extension.

Yeah, it would be a nightmare... But if we're hoping to sign someone of any significance, Kobe's contract almost has to go. So what are the options?
I think that's part of the reason Kobe was pushing so hard to "Keep it together" in the exit interviews, because he knows that no matter what happens, his contract has to be addressed if they want to make any significant moves. And I'm not so sure he's ready to do that... Maybe unless they can promise something big was going to happen.
If you think about it that way, Kobe can exert a fair amount of leverage on the team... Unless a miracle happens, and someone wants to give us someone amazing for Pau, keeping this roster together might be the best option until Kobe's contract expires.
But if a CP3 or Mello or someone nutty was available, could they convince Kobe to leave some of that on the table? IDK...
