Re: Darvin Ham hired as coach. update: Sheed Wallace assistant
Like most press conferences, this one was filled with platitudes. “It all starts on defense,” “we want to get out in transition,” “we’re going to hold everyone accountable,” etc. Fortunately for Ham no one will remember a word from his press conference in a few days. Also worth pointing out that his predecessor coached us to a top 10 defense his first 2 seasons. How do you get Bron and Russ to play defense?
A few points that stood out:
Ham talked about playing 1 inside and 4 on the outside. Again this is nothing new. How will this work with brick laying Westbrook and to a certain extent AD’s poor shooting from the outside? Who’s playing on the inside? How will we remake the roster given our limited resources?
He mentioned Bron will be Bron. This is a euphemism for Bron will do whatever the hell he wants. This includes not buying into playing defense.
Hopefully Ham can perform better at coaching than he did elucidating his points during his press conference.

Re: Darvin Ham hired as coach. update: Sheed Wallace assistant
The coaching staff so far:
Darvin Ham (Head coach)
Rasheed Wallace (Player development, referee relations)
Phil Handy (Player development)
Quinton Crawford (??)
I hope the Busses spend money to poach someone like Atkinson as a lead assistant if he doesn't get a head coaching job elsewhere.

Vogel must be going crazy listening to this press conference.
Could you imagine Frank not talking to his players and not holding them accountable during those numerous film sessions?
4 out and 1 in formation, Their only center listed was Dwight Howard who averaged 16 mins/game, who are the other players who actually posted up and clogged the lanes, Malik Monk? Augustine? Melo?
Heck even Lebron played center at times so Frank can open up the lanes and get more spacing, and you are right, I didn't really matter bec opposing teams just didn't respect Russ' jumpers anyway...but but but, Russ didn't listen before bec he didn't respect a veteran coach who already won a ring, and now it's different bec Darvin is....bigger and now has a henchman in Sheed? Hopefully though, Westbrook would realize that this is his absolute LAST CHANCE to succeed and get a decent contract.

Darvin,
Amen!
You couldn’t possibly have chosen better things to say, not for my ears. I’ve always been of the camp who thinks, ‘if the other team can’t score, we win’. So, any coach preaching suffocating defense will get my vote. Running the break needs little to no coaching. Yes, Russ needs to play defense. And yes, there’s absolutely no physical reason for him not to be a great defender.
This bodes very well. No nonsense kind of guy.
Next, when we get to the playoffs.there needs to be a post season slow poke offense in place, not just run and gun which doesn’t work in the playoffs.

What did Darvin say that Frank already didn’t do.
It’s down to the players and the roster construction. Best of luck Ham. He seems like a good dude but for me it’s kinda whatever hire. Rasheed Wallace lol. Ok.

Yeah, I mean this is exactly the issue. Frank promoted, teached, preached, and fostered defense on the Lakers.....right up to the point where every good defender was traded away, and horrible defenders (with 'me first' attitudes) joined the team. I honestly don't understand the people the think Frank was the issue. Is it a defense mechanism to create hope in the brain that this year will be great? I don't get it.
Like you said.....Best of luck to Ham. I WANT the Lakers to succeed. Don't care how. But if Melo, WB, and the retirement-league squad returns....all of Ham's words are gonna equal another 30-40 win season. IMO none of this coach stuff matters in the slightest. This is up to Pelinka to fix. If Westbrook is still here, then he failed his job, and the season is a wash. Hopefully Ham won't be blamed.

I know it's fun to say stuff like this, but Russ will tell Sheed to go F** himself right to his face. And there ain't a damn think Sheed can do, because if he touches a player.....that career path is over. He's making whatever....2-3 mil, while Russ is making 47. You think CP3 takes nonsense? He didn't get through. Nobody gets through, because in Russ' little world, he's the best out there.
No rings, despite playing with some of the best players in the world for many years. Horrible shooting percentages. 4 teams in 4 seasons. Fanbase booing him. 35 win season (whatever we had...I don't even care). Any of that impinge? Nope....he's indignant on whether he wants to come back or not. "We'll see what this new team/coach looks like, and if they are gonna let me do the things that I know will help the team win" <------ more or less what he said at his exit interview.
Nah.....Russ is a bum. Ham ain't fixin it. Rasheed ain't gonna "beat it into him".

2021 Lakers offseason might be the worst offseason ever by a GM.
- not resigning Caruso
- THT getting a PO on a 3/30 deal
- not bringing back defenders, even the vet min ones that begged to stay (Matthews)
- bringing in a bunch of old guys that can't move
- focusing on shooting above defense for vet mins
- bailing on Dudley who atleast offered a locker room presence
- letting Kidd walk without recognizing his value as HC
- trading for Russ
Only shining light was Reaves. Can't even say Monk was a shining light because you effectively developed a one year vet min with no bird rights or money to keep him.

Honestly, there's nothing more to say than what he said. These conferences are just fluff.

Sheed is crazy enough to whoop Westbrook if he told him where to go to his face. Ham brought him in not for his basketball acumen but to have a loyal dude who got his back and maybe light a fire under Davis in player development sessions.

So I do like the Sheed hiring, btw. Not so sure about getting through to Westbrook, but I think Sheed might be a great staff hiring for a guy like AD. I think you make a great point there.

When expensive Veteran assistants Kidd and Hollins left, Rob hired Fizdale and he also wanted veteran Scott Brooks who could have helped Frank on how to communicate with Russ. He went to UC Irvine and wanted to join the team but their offer was so low that he ended up in Portland.
Coaches and assistants pay dont count on salary cap and therefore wont add to their luxury tax but It just seems like Jeannie has implemented a strict budget so they ended up just promoting their shooting coach to help Vogel strategize… to save money
Now Stotts is available, Snyder is available, let us see if they will hire guys who has vast knowledge about the intricacies of the game… or go cheap again and get another shooting coach

Dang Tamara, you're high maintenance.I have no problem with the FO not spending like crazy on assistant coaches. Long contracts also mean you have to pay to move off those contracts if deciding to part ways before the contract is up. Besides, have you considered that Stotts and Snyder may not be interested in being assistant coaches to a young coach? And on the flip side, hiring them will undermine Darvin Ham too, since they are more experienced.
Agree....why would Snyder want to come and be an assistant coach for this s**-show? If you feel that Ham needs some experienced guys behind him.....then why'd you hire him in the first place? No...I think neither side is interested, and it has nothing to do with $$ for either party either.

The idea of Ex HC’s becoming assistants are nothing new in this league. Atkinson was really good in Brooklyn and get agreed to assist Kerr in Golden State. Lue was so good in Cleveland even won a ring then became assistant for Doc in LA. The $ is significantly less of course but so will be tue pressure of dealing with losses and managing egos. Ultimately it’s on Head coaches and btw Sheed is on staff to confront them. Snyder is probably not interested but the idea is to TRY. Brooks last season would have helped but trying to low ball him , and settling in Penberthy just to save extra $ is just not right imo.
