Now tied with Orlando for 2nd best record overall and with the head-to-head being even, and the schedules seemingly even (each team has 1 tough game left) it looks like Orlando wins the third tiebreaker should they meet:

Tiebreakers
(1) Head-to-head
(2) Division record (if the teams are in the same division)
(3) Conference record
(4) Record vs. Playoff teams, own conference
(5) Record vs. Playoff teams, other conference
(6) Net points, all games

Not yet, but the morons will lose it soon enough.

If the Lakers and Magic meet in the Finals and we both finish the season with the same record, who get home court?

No, the Magic hold the tie-breaker by way of having a better conference record.

The Lakers get homecourt in the event of a tie due to a better cross-conference record. They've won more games against the East then the Magic won against the West.

Directly from the NBA rules - without any edits, typographical, or otherwise (example, the parenthesize in #2 is the verbatim text):

Home Court Advantage:For purposes of home court advantage, ties will be broken pursuant to the procedures used for breaking two-team ties for playoff position.

That leads to:

Two Teams Tied
(1) Better winning percentage in games against each other.
(2) Better winning percentage against teams in own division (only if tied teams are in same division).
(3) Better winning percentage against teams in own conference.
(4) Better winning percentage against teams eligible for playoffs in own conference (including teams that finished the regular season tied for a playoff position).
(5) Better winning percentage against teams eligible for playoffs in opposite conference (including teams that finished the regular season tied for a playoff position).
(6) Better net result of total points scored less total points allowed against all opponents (“point differential”).

#2-Not relevant
#3-Orlando is currently 36-13 and LA is currently 34-15

Looking at the rule book, it is quite clear that, as of today, Orlando has a putative tie-breaker against LAL.

Exactly why I posed this thread. LA needed to stay 1 game up on Orlando due to Magic having only 13 conf losses (maybe 14 after Sunday). Unless Orlando loses to Cleveland (who may sit LBJ) and LA wins out, LA has to go on road vs Cle or Orl now - which begs the question Why sit Kobe in the Den game?

People (including numerous reporters and Hollinger) are saying that the Lakers have the tiebreaker. The Lakers and the Magic are in different conferences, and evidently the league uses cross-conference records to determine the tiebreak for Finals homecourt. I don't think anyone has found an actual citation of this rule, though. I think I remember something about the rule for conference records not counting if the two teams are in a different conference (similar to how teams in different divisions don't use superior division records to tiebreak). If that's the case however, I'd have expected the tiebreak to move on down to the next criterion on the list. (Better record against own conference playoff teams, which Orlando would win.) Why is it so hard for guys to understand the cross conference tie breaker ? The Lakers had a better record against the East than the Magic had against the West............case close.

How about a 1 on 1 game to decide home court. This wouldnt happen but every few years so it would be a huge deal when it went down. Play-off intensity 1 on 1 basketball. Talk about an entertaining treat for fans. Better than letting the all-star game decide home court and a lot better than these

Look at the West and how many great teams there are. Clearly the Lakers 34-15 vs the West is more impressive than Orlando 36-13 vs the lEast.
