The Lakers are in dire need of a perimiter scorer

Post#1 » by CodyB » Tue Apr 20, 2010 2:19 pm

Watch how teams play off on Fish, Farmar and Brown and put all their efforts on to covering Kobe. This is what screws our offense as much as the clogging of the lane debacle.

Neither of those guys have the consistent shooting touch to be consistent scorers, Farmar and Brown cannot orchestrate a half court offense and Fisher is too damned slow.

Kobe isn't an "explosive" scorer anymore, and is definately not a 3 point threat by any means. The best he can hope is to shoot a respectable 35% from downtown. He is the best mid range player in the league, and he is best suited 20 feet and in.

The Lakers need a guy who can take players off the dribble from outside and get to the whole, open up lanes for Pau, Bynum and Kobe.

Right now, our closest remedy to this void is Lamar Odom. Lamar needs to be taking his man off the dribble from the perimeter. When he is on the floor, Kobe should be playing a power forwards game on offense and Lamar should be playing the 2 (or 1) on offense. When our offense became stagnant last season, it picked up when Lamar would be getting piss easy layups and fouls because his defender is either too slow or too small. This is still the case. Hypothetical situation with the Pau, Kobe and Odom offense.

Low Post
-----------------------
Kobe or Pau

Mid-High Post
------------------
Kobe or Pau

perimiter
--------------
Odom

Keep fish and Artest in to spread the floor.

Our offense, right now, is a pile of garbage. Our D is the best in the league. Unfortunately, it isn't 2004-2006 anymore and playoff basketball doesn't revolve around <80 point games. Our only hope to start out running and scoring our opponents with consistency, is to play our guys to their strength. When Pau came back from injury, Kobe went from the most efficient numbers in his career to the same old case of dribble, dribble CLANK.

Lamar's perimiter prowess isn't nearly utlised to its full potential
Kobe is playing too far away from his death zones
Pau isn't able to utilise his passing games
Andrew Bynum is the only one who never looks too lost out there, at least offensively.. If he is effectively used, he is 17+ppg in <30mpg at about 60%. He isn't our franchise yet, but I feel that he will be.
I love your mum in my shirt

Yeah ! I agree, we need a 3 pt. shooter desperately because when our offense gets stagnant and our bigs or Kobe get doubled, we need to have a guy who can consistently hit 3 pointers.

Just like Korver last night when he hit that clutch 3 pointer vs. Denver.
I believe our MLE has to be spent on a PG who can consistently score from downtown, perfect for the triangle and Phil.

Kobe has to stop playing in the post so much and get his hot shooting with the face to the basket back.

I hate to see him playing the way he's done it this season.

I wouldnt mind signing Korver for the MLE and Dooling for the vet minimum.

-Korver might be the best pure shooter in the league and his defense isnt that bad. I invision him getting 10-12ppg off the bench playing with this Lakers squad.

-Dooling is a DEFENSIVE upgrade over Fisher and Farmar. His 35% career three point shooting is good enough. This season, Farmar shot 37% from three and Fisher just 34%. I imagine Dooling three point shooting % would go up, playing with the 5 Laker post players.

-I imagine Fisher would be brought back at the vet minimum for one more season.

the problem is getting a PG quick enough to defend the PGs of the league whilst getting great spacing...

not that many available...

I definitely agree here. The Lakers added a whole other dimension to their offensive attack when Sasha was lighting it up from behind the arc a couple of years ago. But his days on the Laker roster seem to be numbered at this point. So, what would you guys think about adding JJ Redick for next year? He will be a restricted free agent after this year. Even with the limited minutes he gets in Orlando, Redick has proven that he can knock down the 3-pt shot in the NBA (he leads the Magic three-point attack with 41%). Redick also has a high basketball IQ and would fit into the triangle offense easily.

i wouldnt mind reddick at all.. he has improved immensely since entering the league.. i think he would be a good addition to the team. he has a sweet stroke, has playoff experience (and has had decent games in the playoffs), hes an adequate defender and will do whatever is required of him when hes in the game. and as much as i think we will let morrison walk this offseason, i think it it is ironic that there is the possibility, though slim, that reddick and morrison are on the same team. given that they were compared to each other back in their college days. lol

but i would gladly take reddick off the magics hands!! either him, korver, or even morrow would be great. though i dont think golden state will allow him to come to LA since he is restricted. add a new point guard, a shooter, and some half decent role players that will contribute SOMETHINGGGG off the bench and we will be set for the next few seasons. we are winning games strictly because our starting five is so good.. well.. besides the fact that fisher tends to have defensive lapses on the quick pgs.

I would do anything to get Deron Williams here.

Anyway, I actually think we miss Sasha a little bit. He's not a perimeter scorer, but he's a shooter. Even as bad as he's been he'd still be better than Artest, Fisher, etc. in spreading the floor.

Reddick would be great but does anybody here really think the Magic will just let him walk away to the Lakers they'll match whatever the Lakers offer him. Korver would be great but again if the bulk of the MLE is going to a PG unless Korver wants to take the Lakers LLE I don't know how the Lakers can afford him either. The Lakers draft pick from Memphis seems to be the best hope for the Lakers to get a shooter I've seen very early mock drafts guys like Sylven Landesberg could be available to pick up he shoots 38% from the 3pt line or Desean Butler who can hit threes he makes 35% of his threes. Also Jordan Crawford could be available at that spot he shoots 39% from the 3pt line but he seems like a better shooting version of Shannon Brown.
GO LAKERS
