Chances of the Diesel coming back to LaLa Land??

Post#1 » by fongie24 » Thu Apr 29, 2010 11:54 pm

I saw this on a different thread and it caught my eye.. I've heard the rumor before but i want to know what everyone thinks..

What do you think about the diesel coming back to LA?? He would obviously take a lesser role and make less money (not sure how much CLE gave him, just know it was a 1 yr contract), but we could use a back up center so we could keep Gasol at the 4... but he would be a solid solid player coming off the bench and im sure he wouldnt mind winning another title or two ;]

The only way Shaq comes back to LA will be in 4 or 5 years to get his number retired.

I've thought about this a bit... I think it could happen. I'd actually want it to happen if he could play his Cleveland role here...

But I think a few things have to happen first:

First, I don't think Shaq would come to LA unless the Cavs won it all this year. I think if they win it all, there's a good chance LeBron leaves and the team basically blows up. If they don't win it all, but come real close, like losing to us in the finals, I think the team might be back like it is now... If they lose to Boston or Orlando, James is gone but the last place Shaq will come is to LA.
I don't think Shaq would play with Kobe unless he had more rings than Kobe... In fact if he does win this year, I think he'd push for a chance to play with Kobe just to be sure he will always have more rings than Kobe. I don't think he'd mind finishing his career here, but only if he wins another chip without Kobe and if he does, he'll come here with much less motivation than he has now...

I also think the only way he'd be welcome back is if Kobe wins it all again this year... Same reasoning...

So basically, It's not going to happen... And even if it did, Shaq would probably be about as motivated as Ammo is on the bench.

I'd take him back for vet min if we win it this year :)

We should sign both Shaq and Jermaine for the vet mins, then trade LO for a PG.

Then when Pau and Bynum get a little tired Phil can just sit in his chair and yell out "Send in the O'Neals!" and we'll see 5 mins of the O'Neal twin towers.

i doubt either shaq or jermaine will come for vet mins.. but im saying.. if we just signed shaq and just added a shooter and maybe tony allen, we would be unstoppable.. even if we keep fish at the point.. we all know he cant keep people in front of him, but we still had a hell of a record with him running the point this year. the starting 5 got us a decent lead then when the bench came in the other team caught up.. if we keep our starting five.. and improve our bench greatly like i described.. we would pretty much unstoppable..

I'm actually not against the idea. Getting Shaq for cheap would be a solid deal. I've said it before that Gasol/Odom and Bynum/Shaq would be a great big man rotation. Nobody would ever be prepared for the match ups. We could throw so many different looks at teams it wouldn't even be funny.

Shaq off the bench also means rest and it can help solidify a bench. It would be a true luxury running 2 bigs like Lamar and Shaq off the bench. His presence would also help keep bench's tempo similar to the starting units because Shaq isn't a high tempo kind of guy. An advantage to that would mean Derek Fisher could play in a system like that and we could get him back for cheap. Even at his point in his career, Shaq > Farmar + Brown.

I do not see Shaq coming for the vet min though. He still is serviceable enough to make more money than just a vet min.

yeah i figure him to be more than vet min too.. but even if we did get him for a little more.. and only went and got a defensive minded small forward, and resigned one of our two PGs.

fisher/farmar or brown
kobe/sasha
artest/ (defensive minded SF)
gasol/odom
bynum/shaq

and some really cheap bench warmers like DJ, and powell... doesnt need to exactly be them.. just cheap like them

Don't think there is much of a chance. The Lakers are paying about $40 mil a year for Gasol, Bynum and Odom. I don't think Shaq will play for the vet minimum so I can't see the Lakers paying Shaq what he wants especially when his services aren't badly needed.

i guess ill just put this on my wish list then haha

i think he services are needed on our bench.. i think the fat guy on the corner could help out our bench.. i can count the games on one hand this year that our bench played well.. im not asking them to gain the lead, which would be nice, i would just like the bench that plays well while our starters get some rest.. shaq will always need a double team.. even if he gets old he is still one massive individual.. theres not too many guys that need double teams that come off the bench.. especially at the center position.. and it would be great because he already knows the triangle! his presence would open up space for sasha (or a different shooter if we get one), brown/farmar, and cutting lanes for tony allen (if we were to sign him).

i know its a bit of a stretch.. but think it would work beautifully it if happened

He's coming back to LA to play the Lakers if the Cavs reach the Finals.

depends how the finals end.

cleveland flounders and LA wins it again? kobe's 5 rings arent going to stand in the way of shaq's ring chasing

would actually belittle shaq's legacy a little if he chose to ring chase on kobe's team

Shaq's in a great place to get a couple more, extend his career with a young hungry Lebron, let's hope Kobe get's a few before Lebron takes over.

.. No. I would not want him here. It would seriously make me question this organization and it would be hard to even cheer anymore. Andrew Bynum doesn't need that either.

i dont see why its such a bad idea.. if they say that there is nothing between them anymore like they say so, then why wouldnt he want to come back? we would have the best front court rotation in the league by far (bynum, pau, lamar, shaq).. he would help solidify our bench and can be another leader on the team.. he knows how to play with kobe, fish, and phil.. i dont see the same problems arising as when they were together before.. both players are aging and starting to realize that they are going to have to refer to their other teammates instead of fighting for stardom..

before they were fighting to be option 1, shaq knows he can be that anymore.. if he comes here, he would be the number one option off the bench.. he knows how to make people better, shaq has proven that... and our bench could use any help it can get.

i mean.. i dont see it happening either.. but not because he wouldnt fit, its because we just dont have the money this year to revamp our bench (which is a MUST) and pay the HoF big man.. but we will see.. stranger things have happened..
