Bynum plans to play despite knee
By Brian Kamenetzky

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. -- Lakers center Andrew Bynum sat out practice this week to rest his injured right knee, but the time off didn't do him much good.
After participating in Saturday afternoon's practice, Bynum said the knee isn't cooperating.
"It's just worse. A little worse, but I'm still able to play through it so I'm going to keep pushing ahead," he said.
Bynum said he will receive treatment and play when the Lakers open the Western Conference finals Monday night at Staples Center against the Phoenix Suns.
Bynum suffered a torn meniscus in his right knee against the Oklahoma City Thunder on April 30th, but has continued to play through the pain. The injury, he said, became worse "probably in Game 3, Game 4" of the Lakers' second round series against the Utah Jazz. Bynum was effective in the first two games, averaging 12.5 points and 12 rebounds, but didn't score in Game 3 and had six in Game 4 as the Lakers swept Utah.
Overall, Bynum averaged 10.3 points and 6.3 rebounds in just under 25 minutes during the series.
Structurally, Bynum said the injury is no worse than before.
"[The problem is] keeping more swelling [out]. Not like the structure, but it's creating more swelling because I'm playing with an injured limb," he said. "It's just something that I'm just going to continue to treat, continue to try and pump the swelling out, milk it, and take it from there."
Lakers coach Phil Jackson said it was important to get Bynum on the floor ahead of Monday's Game 1.
"Andrew, he's running with some limitations but he still looks good," Jackson said. "It's still good to see him out there. We're just monitoring it. We wanted to get him some activity close to the game, but not make it too close, so there's some recovery time."
Bynum said he would "back off" during Sunday's practice. He isn't sure how effective he'll be defensively against Phoenix's high speed, pick-and-roll heavy offensive system. On the other end, Phoenix has struggled to defend bigger players inside. But if Bynum's mobility is hampered, the Lakers may not be able to exploit any matchup advantages. In four regular season games against the Suns, Bynum averaged nearly 18 points, 9.8 rebounds and 1.5 blocks.
Kobe Bryant, himself receiving treatment for a wide variety of injuries including his knee and finger, also participated in practice for the first time this week.
"I feel fine," he said. "Feels good."
Rust isn't weighing heavily on Bryant's mind. Asked to pinpoint his biggest concern about a long layoff between games without playing much basketball, Bryant shrugged. "I don't have one. None at all."
Brian Kamenetzky covers the Lakers for ESPNLosAngeles.com.
I know this sounds cold and callous but Is this kid ever going to be healthy? Year after year we get into the playoffs and he turns into a no-show because of some injury. I think Bynum has a ton of potential and he gives us such a size advantage that makes us hard to beat but at some point you have to consider the utility of have such an injury-prone center. A year ago I thought he could eventually turn into a consistent 20-10 guy but with each injury I have serious doubts about how high his ceiling will be. At this point I think Toronto will probably be getting ripped off severely if a Bosh-Bynum sign and trade actually happened this summer.

hes injured, but he can play
its just a matter of managing the pain and swelling that occurs during and afterwards
this is an injury that just gets more painful, but not "career threatening" worse

It's worse than just manageing pain, he can barely jump, move, cut.

its not THAT bad, those meniscus tears are not THAT bad
if it takes a couple of cortisone injections into the knee, just drain the knee of pus and in goes the needle.

The moment the Cavs lost we were put in a better position. Bynum became less important. We can win a chip with putting LO in his place. At this point anything, and I mean anything he gives us is gravy. Boston isnt a juggernaut this year and the Suns/Magic arent physical teams. The Cavs are a different story. Going into this year I didnt think we could win without Bynum... I have changed my opinion since then

We need to seriously see if the Cavs have any kind of interest in getting Bynum for LeBron should he decide to bail. That's not exactly a fair exchange, but it's damn sure better than nothing. Add Vujacic in there for an expiring.
Hell, maybe we can throw in Odom for Mo since LeBron can play PF if he wanted to... lol.
PG: Mo Williams
SG: Kobe Bryant
C: Pau Gasol
SF: Ron Artest
PF: LeBron James
Ridiculous!

I don't think Bynum's injury necessarily costs us a title this year and quite frankly I've stopped hoping that he can come back and be that offensive presence that we'd like him to be. My concern is further down the road when more and more injuries begin to pile up and he eventually becomes less and less effective. I really think we have to start cutting the cord with this kid and hope we can getting something of value for him. For all the promise he shows, all these injuries just scare the crap out of me. Centers who go through this many injuries early in the career often have various problems later on. I could easily see him suffering some kind of career-ending injury over the next few years that leaves us looking for another starting center to replace him.

ive had the same injury before getting it cleaned out
its ok to play on, just play through the pain, its the aftermath thats the issue where you might not be able to walk properly for a few days where it feels like the joint has gone arthritic
there are treatments for pain. there are treatments for inflammation. hes being paid 12.5mil this season. he had better play at the most important time of the year

Not quite. The same old song is his teammates hurting him, this time it was on his own. Problem is all we remember is when the playoffs roll around we don't have him or we don't have him at 100%. As much as I like Drew I have to admit its getting old. This can't happen again next year.

This year it has been:
Elbow- November
Hip- February
Calf- March
Knee- April
Can't we just all see past the "20/10/2" potential and realize... SELL WHILE THE GETTING IS GOOD!

If, and it's a big IF, the Cav's are willing to S&T, then they HAVE TO get Lebron out of the East. The cannot take seeing him come into Cleve and tear them up 3x per year, and then when they get back in the playoffs potentially FACE him. That would be their worst nightmare. S&T to the WEST - - and Bynum is the best, young potential they can get. Bynum/Artest/Vujacic/2 1sts ('11&'13) is a massive haul in for them (for Lebron/Boobie)
Mo/(West)/Telfair*
Parker*/West*/Vujacic*
Artest/Moon*/Green
Jamison/Hickson/Powe*
Bynum/Varejao
- still a top 4 EC playoff team - with strong D and tons of '11 expirings.

I think(hope?) this is a mind game, to get the Suns to get overconfident.
Bynum = the big Machiavelli,

structurally its not getting worse, its just the swelling that comes from playing on an injury. its still about him playing through the pain, and he did that in practice.

I have to wonder if Bynum is just playing mind games. Who openly admits to injuries getting worse in the playoffs? Especially since he's been chillin for the last week. Sounds a little fishy!

Which is probably why he's playing.

If this is indeed true and not a mind game, I think we should shut Bynum down for the season. He's 22 years old and has his whole career ahead of him. Its just not worth the risk of making it worse, we were find without Bynum last season and I still like our chances right now without him.
