LAL FO want Brian Shaw to replace PJ? (Sam Amico of NBA.com)

Post#1 » by miggs » Mon May 24, 2010 8:46 pm

RealGM Wiretap wrote:Sam Amico of NBA.com writes that the Lakers are worried about giving coach Phil Jackson a long-term contract because they believe a lockout is looming.

It was reported last week that Jackson would likely have to take a pay cut to remain with Los Angeles.

Amico also writes that the Lakers want to eventually replace Jackson with Brian Shaw.

"Lakers want to replace PJ w/Brian Shaw at some point. They're convinced lockout looms, so don't want to give PJ a multi-year deal," Amico wrote on his Twitter page.

Interesting read, but i have some questions myself. 1) Is Sam Amico credible? Somebody know of his past work? 2) Did Amico hear this from someone in the Front Office or a "inside source in the organization" as they put it? 3) I really like Brian Shaw but can he keep this team in glory like PJ has? 4) What kind of time frame is "eventually"? 5) Can he capture them mentally the same? I'm very interested in hearing your feedback on this guys. PJ no longer being the coach does worry me in terms of us still competing for rings.

I understand that we're focused on the PHX series right now not whatever the summer brings but just thought I'd bring it up for some good discussion and to hear reactions once you read this. Mind you, i'm skeptical as to how concrete this info really is but then again i don't know of Sam Amico lol

Brian Shaw? Really? That's the last person I expected. If anything, I figured Byron Scott would slide into the role of Head Coach once PJax retired.

Lakers need a defensive expert coach if anybody. Their rotation is atrocious and always late. At least they should watch the Celts defense, their rotation is always on point and before the attack.

I take offense to this.....B was a coach while he was playing for us it seemed. He understands the game and is a good floor leader. he is being groomed to fill in for PJ, but only after PJ retires.

Agreed. You and I have been talking about this for years. Brian's always had the bearing of a coach -- smart, level-headed, cool under pressure. No guarantee he'd pan out, but if we do have to replace Phil, I think we could do a lot worse.

Would be interesting to see what system he runs and Shaw should be fine as long as fisher is in the dressing room and then slides over to the bench alongside him.

However I do think we need to retain Phil even if its on a year by year basis.

I'm curious what does the lockout have to do with resigning Phil? He would not get paid during the lockout so it would not matter. Besides I don't think Phil wants to coach long term anyways.

As long as the Kobe, Pau Lakers exist, I want Phil Jackson to coach this team. The Buss family can't be so obtuse as to assume that a lockout would wipeout an entire season, and they can't use the assumption of a lockout as a reason not to sign Phil to a multiyear contract. The FO is making a huge mistake if they are seriously considering letting Phil walk.

reports have the bulls reaching out to phil jackson, the cavs have him on their short list, and the lakers are short changing him? this should honestly be a non issue.

Shaw had interviewed for the Kings job (among others) the last two times they had openings (pre-Theus/pre-Musselman, but I think he declined last year before they hired Westphal), and he was apparently Petrie's pick to be the next Kings coach, but I guess the Maloofs went with other two coaches instead (boo).

I always thought Shaw would be a great coach, and I think he would have been an outstanding coach for Tyreke Evans...but do you think Shaw would be better with a veteran driven team or with a young team?

I don't have a problem with Shaw, and I don't have a problem with any descendant of the Phil Jackson coaching tree, but wait until our window closes and we have to rebuild before letting go of Phil.

We need PJ to coach here as long as possible. No point in him going to Chicago or even Cleveland. As of right now, PJ is on a lot of team's WANT list.

It wouldn't make any sense for the Lakers to let Phil walk, especially when you have a chance to be on Top for the next 2-3 seasons till Kobe starts to decline and you would need to rebuild. If you guys do let him walk, you might play against him in the Finals next year, and I really don't want Chicago to get Phil or Lebron, or both..

Brian Shaw would be a fabulous coach. He has great demeanor, is respected by the players and has worked under Phils wing for quite some time now. Knows the triangle and is a winner.

our next coach (if it isnt PJ) is most definitely going to run the triangle

kobe wouldnt have it any other way

therefore, there are really only 2 options: kurt rambis and brian shaw

not unless byron scott comes in and leaves all the offensive coordination to the assistants. we'd be paying him to be mike brown

This is a complete non-story. I'll eat my own arm if Phil lands somewhere else before retiring.

i would like phil first and foremost but if he should retire i think b shaw should get the nod. if he can't handle it i would go after scott. hopefully alot of this is just reporters putting their own twists on the story. i can'tsee phil leaving the lakers for the bulls, especially seeing as how east lebron crumbled under pressure this year. phil likes winners.
Only on realgm is 27,000 points, 5 rings, 1 rs mvp and 2 finals mvp considered overrated!
