Wheres all the rivalries gone?

Remember the days when the Laker fans and players actually hated our playoff opponents and fans? There was real bad blood and made for a more exciting series.

The best ones were definately the ones with the Blazers and Kings because not only were they so easy to hate but we ended up crushing them.

These days its just not the same, the rivary with the Celtics feels manufactured and there's not the same passion as before. I used to think the reason for this was that our players were just too nice but even with Ron Ron added this year it still hasn't brought any additional drama.

Needs Scottie Pippen knockin' over towels in the hallway going back to his locker room, Rick Fox throwin' it down with Doug Christie, And Iverson stomping over Tyron Lue.

The players of today dont have any pride in winning and losing, theres no other way to explain it.

They just want to make their money and be friends, which I dont blame them for because I want the same thing with my job. Its not life or death for me I dont care as long as they pay me.

Maybe its a generational thing, but it sure is a hell of a lot better to watch when the players actually gave a **** about the outcome of the game. Kobe is a rare breed.

NBA today is more about the Benjamins then winning championship and personal pride.

The Good/experience teams- Lakers, Celtics, San Antonio get it, that why they always win.

I also think its has to do with Kids coming out of High School and playing with AAU teams.

Kids dont have that connection with a High School/ College anymore. There not trying to win it for your home town or Alma mater anymore.

Their more about showcasing there skills so they have a resume/youtube video that their agents can pitch to prospective employers ( NBA teams or College recruiters)

Lets face it, NBA became a business but not just for the teams, but for the players and any aspiring NBA prospect.

"...the Lakers beat the SuperSonics... Today was a good day."

It's a bigger league now... You don't play the same teams as often.
Players move around more. The team you faced this year in the playoffs might look completely different next time.
Also there's more coverage of other teams so you can sort of get to like some of the other teams before you face them in the playoffs.

But judging from the GB, rivalries are alive and well... EVERYBODY hates the Lakers. Orlando hates Boston. We hate Denver, Phoenix, and Boston...

You just need to look a little harder and they're still there.

Realgm "rivalries" are nothing compared to the true rivalries back in the day.

Realgm rivalries are just a bunch of player fans using calculators and ms excel to justify their bias. Considering how tight this site is monitored thats all it will ever be.

There was legit hatred between the Lakers and the Blazers/Kings/Spurs even. Sadly those days are over.

We all wish. Now you get thrown out of a series instead of T'd up. It's all about money now. It's almost like football. Get a huge contract then the last few good years you have left try to hook up with a "winning" team. It's a joke. Shaking hands hugging before games etc...Winning is not a priority basically.

How can you have a rivalry when there is little to no parity? There are like 6 legit title contenders in the NBA, all jam packed with All Star talent. The rest are just peon teams in comparison.

Yeah all the teams suck! Blazers are the only team making a comeback. 76ers suck, Knicks suck, Pacers suck, I could go on. The legendary teams like the Lakers, Bulls, Utah, and Celtics are the only teams consistently putting good teams on the floor.

I think that's more a problem you have out West. In the East there was good fire between Boston, Orlando and Cleveland since 2008. You need some legit opponents. So let's hope for the Blazers and Rockets to stay healthy and you'll have some fodder to work with regarding heated playoff series :)

Speak for yourself--I ****** hate the Lakers....

I can tolerate them when they're not playing the Celtics...but the minute I see Fisher, Kobe, and Pau out there with the Green, I feel like punching something...

While I wouldn't go so far as to say today's players don't care, I will say they are not nearly as passionate about winning as those players from past eras. Just look at this "so-called" free agent summit that was recently squashed by the league. Do you think Magic, Bird, or Jordan would have ever planned a meeting to discuss their impending free agency? Guys from back-in-the-day were friendly with one another, but I guarantee you they would have chosen winning over friendship any day of the week and twice on Sundays. I'm not so sure that is the case with some of these guys today.

Well thats the problem most of the stars you just mentioned aren't winning and honestly their teams suck. They will never make it to the playoffs consistently with the scrubs they have on the bench.

Think of 6 of the free agents went to the historically great teams. How cool would the NBA be once again. We have the Lakers - Cletics Rivalry back. Think if the Knicks and the Heat were relevant again. It would be great to see six of the top free agents split up and join in 2 or 3 to solidify the Bulls, Knicks, Heat I mean just wow!

i'm pretty much with you but on the opposite side. i think me going through all the 80s series between the two will keep it that way for life.................and 2008/2010 just adds fuel to the fire.
