But even if they won 08 and/or 09 they'd be the Old Lakers now without Bynum or Odom (whomever McHale took - and Pau obviously), Kobe wouldn't have signed his extension, and LA would be effed up going forward as Kobe opted out to find a younger crew to end his career with, like the one across the hall!

Not getting Garnett isn't the reason you got Gasol.

Bynum going down with his injury forced you guys to get Gasol because you needed a big man. Had Bynum not been injured it's a real possibility the Lakers don't trade for Gasol.

The premise of the topic is you guys got Gasol because you didn't get Garnett. That one event has nothing to do with the other. There's no connection.

even though mchale did play a 1% role in us getting pau still garnett is my second favorite player(kobe#1) and that would have been a great sign to see a fully heathly bynum pared with garnett artest, kobe and hinrich. we couldve been the best defensive team in history but oh well im happy with what we got

I disagree. We were trying to get KG and for LO and Bynum. If we do get KG, we don't even consider Pau, but we missed out on KG and so when Bynum came up lame we needed to look to someone who was available.

I'd say both of these statements are true:

We would not have gotten Gasol if McHale hadn't handed his old team KG
We would not have gotten Pau if Bynum didn't get hurt.

but the OP is correct

win-win. they got their championship. and we continue on winning with ours.

In hindsight, the Timberwolves refusing to trade Garnett to LAL because the GM, McHale was an ex-Celtic, turned out to be the best thing to ever happen to the Lakers.

Gasol clearly outplayed Garnett in this series, and it appears the Lakers' window for winning championships will be open much longer with Gasol than it would be with Garnett.

Oh, the irony...

Lakers could have gotten Gasol and Garnett, they wouldn't have needed to include Kwame's expiring and probably not Marc Gasol in a KG trade.

i find it hard to believe kupchak wouldn't have said "kwame, critter, marc gasol and 2 firsts for pau gasol??" and said no even if bynum wasn't injured or we already had KG for bynum, odom.

there might've been a problem trying to promise two 1sts to two teams though

KG would've been great in the triangle, and he would've been OUR lovable intense douchebag instead

actually it might, bynum may have been the trade bait for garnett, and we keep kwame, from what i understand, buss offered glen taylor "anything" cept kobe...
