Jackson: I'm leaning towards retiring pg 3

Post#1 » by The Skyhook » Tue Jun 22, 2010 7:07 pm

This is from Kevin Ding's twitter. I have a twitter account setup to follow mostly Lakers rumors and he is usually a good source for info.

Latest Sports Illustrated cover story on Lakers includes quote from Phil's daughter Chelsea: "I think this is it. I think he’s done now."

I hope this isn't true since I think many of us want him back for the 3peat. It just doesn't seem right for him to walk away from it all. If this is true then depending on who the next coach is we could see some changes. For example without a triangle offense coach the need for a traditional point guard might be greater than any other needs.

I agree with the PG comment. I think it was said sunday we should expect an announcement for Jackson.

It will be wierd if he leaves. Though I don't think we'll see a ton of changes. Most likely Shaw will take over and keep most of the staff, Cleamons has been there forever. They keep the tri in play and run some off sets part time, no different then this year really. I would start to worry about some of the psyches at that point though, but Fish and Kobe should keep them mostly in line.

im pretty sure byron scott or van gundy will be our next coach... you dont just allow brian shaw who has no head coaching experience to be at the helm of a team coming off of 2 straight championships... this is why rambis left and probably why shaw will leave as well.

Until I hear it from the man himself I'm not going to listen to rumors. I just hope that he should informed us right away of his decision. That way we have time to talk with other coaches, B.Scott before Cleveland gets him.

If Phil does leave, ideal situation is hire B. Scott and retain Cleamons (who worked with him in NO) and Hamblen. If Shaw does decide to leave for a head coaching gig, so be it.
Thank you, Phil.

Scott is just waiting around for Phil's desicion. I think more than anything he wants this job but I have a feeling Jeff Van Gundy does too. Anytime he is a commentator for Laker games its like he reveals all of his plans if he was a Lakers coach. I think Van Gundy already has an entire strategy planned out if he was the coach of the Lakers. I'm pretty sure the guy is looking for a head coaching job and if the Lakers called him for an interview he would definitely go.

If Phil leaves I really would like B-scott. I'm not sold on Shaw. This is not a team you experiment with, we need a proven winner. And what Scott did with New Orleans was amazing. Look at that roster, besides Paul and West the had nothing
“If this is his team, that means no more coming into camp fat/out of shape, no more blaming others for our team’s failure, my team doesn’t mean only when we win it means carrying the burden of defeat just as gracefully as you carry a championship trophy.”

I read somewhere that Phil got sick of Ron Artest during the finals. He said he was begging him not to take any 3's and he didn't like his antics with the media

Ron chasing away our ticket to a threepeat? Say it ain't so.. I would much rather see Ron gone than Phil...I noticed I might have just opened the flood gates with that comment :D

SI trying to sell magazines, Phils kids have been saying he'll retire every offseason.

The decision is mostly based on his health from everything I've read. If the docs clear him he'll be coaching next year.

I don't see JVG as a good fit. He's a defensive only coach that will only make the offense worse, and I just don't see him getting hired by a team that has a reputable history of being flashy and offensive-oriented. If Phil leaves it's most likely going to be Shaw as the head coach.

We will just have to wait and see. If he does leave. So be it. Shaw or Scott. Maybe or maybe not will be the next coach. It is Kobes team. He runs the thing. So I guess who ever gets the head duties. It is still Kobe who is the real power.

I actually just heard this on TV. It's in the background so not really watching it, but some guy said something about how Farmar is moving on (another thread here seems to confirm that with his exit interview) and that Phil Jackson is about to retire.

I don't think he is leaving. but if I were to chose Id rather have JVG on the sideline than B.scott.
