if phil retires...

Post#1 » by Kreuk » Thu Jun 24, 2010 9:14 pm

and a new coach is brought in... does the entire complexion of the team change or need to change... because i doubt we will be running the triangle if byron scott or van gundy take over... and in that respect is phil's vacillation on retiring or not ruining our chances of making a decent move for a pure PG... and also causing us to miss chances on getting players that would be upgrades for our team because... we need to have these players (like odom, brown, walton, etc) for the triangle, but what happens if we abandon the triangle...

I doubt Kobe would allow a coach to do anything BUT the triangle offense at this point of his career.

So either Van Gundy gets a crash course in the running of the Triangle or Brian Shaw gets a battlefield promotion to Head Coach.

I don't think so...

Even at the end of his career, I can see Kobe running off picks a la Ray Allen or Reggie Miller. He's always trying to improve his game, why wouldn't he be open to a new offense.

Running a modified version of the triangle like we do now will be even more important as Kobe gets older.

We run the 'Kobe' now and we'll run the 'Kobe' if we get a new coach...

The only way I see us deviating from what we do now is if we were to land some big name free agent like LeBron and needed to move some other direction to make the talent work for us.

That's not happening and the Triangle is a big part of what makes us so formidable, so I think we'll keep doing what we do...

If a coach were to come in and force a major change, it'd be one of the biggest mistakes ever. I honestly think we'd be in the lottery if that happened.

Basically I think Phil isn't going anywhere.

Let's look at history..... Phil left. Rudy T was brought in. He tried to install a new offense. The offense sucked for everyone but Kobe's stats, and LA failed to make the playoffs. Kobe says it was a mistake to abandon the Tri.

I think the Triangle stays as long as Kobe stays, regardless of coach. Just a tweak or two depending on personnel.

If Phil retires I think it's B Shaw. You can see in the finals Phil was communicating with B Shaw often readying him for the baton pass. Personally I'm OK with it, I think the Lakers are only going to be better next year. Really next years is in Mitch's hands more than Phil's because I think the Lakers are going to be that much better of a team. Go Mitchie!

If anything, he should of let us known earlier. Now if he does retire, who are we going to sign?

Guys, we run the triangle a lot less than you think...Kobe free lances quite a bit and we take quick shots a lot in the half court set before the triangle can really create a desired shot for the offense.

This team needs easier baskets no matter who is coach. Our fast break is poor - we need more easy baskets so that Kobe and Pau do not have to work as hard scoring all the time in the half court set.

Scott coming in would mean breaking more - and smart when there are good opportunities - more of a motion offense - pick and rolls - and a heavy dose of feeding the post from the low blocks.

If we bring in a more open court type of player for the starting point guard job, the Lakers could still be very dynamic without running the triangle.

The Kobe - Pau pick and roll should be unstoppable and we should run it a lot more. Feeding Bynum and Pau in the post and cutting off that and spotting up for threes would also be very effective.

I also believe that a motion offense would get more offensively out of Artest and Odom.

So - if Phil retires and Scott is hired - no reason the Lakers can't be very successful without the triangle.

Personally i want phil to return( unless he would be risking his health) because i do not want any excuse's from the Lakers next year in the finals. Get Kobe and Bynum healthy too.

yes... that dude is right... they deviate from the triangle all the time... it's like whenever the spirit moves them... probably why it's so hard to learn the offense. because sometime's they're in it and other times they are running other plays...

and LMAO at the dude blaming rudy t's new offense as a reason for our failure that season... did you forget that hamblen took over and started running the triangle eventually and the team still sucked - because we had crappy players...

i think i might want brian shaw is the new head coach...only because he's atleast been around jackson and the system for so long that he should know by now how to run this team....

if an outsider coach comes in, then no doubt it has to be byron scott.

i know this is thinking totally out of the box but i like fisher as aour head coach if phill retires. he knows the system, knows the players and kobe totally respect him. I know he has no coaching experience but leadership is something that you have or you dont and fisher has it, plus put a good coaching staff helping him, maybe keeping phill like a consulting and i think it would work

Not a bad call.
I think DFish can make a great head coach in the NBA.
He needs some experience though.
I can see him becoming an assistant coach for a few years after he retires as a player, and then becoming a head coach.

Phil, just make a decision. 8 days after you won it all. We need to go forward and move onto other business in the offseason.
