My Off-Season Plan w/ $#'s
The Lakers just had $16,100,000 come off the books from fulfilled player contracts
The Lakers also just had $12,000,000 come off the books for PJ’s fulfilled contract (and boy did he fulfill it!)
So we have a grand TOTAL of $28,100,000 to equal last years budget. Dr. Buss made a profit of ONLY $16,000,000 last season after paying his kids $2,000,000 each (when most teams were losing $ and after a crazy high pay roll). The value of the Lakers organization also appreciated by $50,000,000 and has never been higher.
Team needs:
1) Coach
2) Starting PG
3) Center depth in the case of 4th annual Bynum injury
4) Back up PG
Team solutions:
1) Offer PJ 10 mil and let him know he is loved and come back for that ($18,100,0000 left)
2) Pry away Hinrich 9.5 mil for Sasha’s 5.8 mil expiring contract and a 1st round pick. Additional cost 3.7 mil. ($14,400,000 left)
3) Sign ring chasing Shaq for 1 last reunion season (so the fans can see our 2 Laker dynasties of the decade together WOW) cost 1.2 mil (no luxury tax on vet min) ($13,200,000 left)
4) Fish Vet minimum 1.2 mil (no luxury tax) ($12,000,000 left)
5) Extra: Lets give Critt another chance for helping us get Pau for 1 mil and restrict his gun concealed weapons permit ($11,000,000 left)
6) Bew Need Created, New Need Solved: After trading Sasha, Kobe needs a back up SG. Bell and Miller are options. I would prefer to bring back Brown for 3 mil so we keep our athleticism. Also I dont want to go down the Celts/Spurs way and just get old. ($8,000,000 left)
Side note: This also gives us the super athletic/freaks of nature C-squad for Phil to toy around with of Critt/Brown/Ebank/Caracter/Bynum at the end of blow outs.
By doing this we accomplished our mission of making the Lakers better AND saving the Lakers money $8,000,000. In addition, Dr. Buss saves an additional 2.4 mil in luxury taxes because there is NO tax on veteran’s minimum salaries.
Drum role: Let me introduce the best Laker team possible of all-times line-up:
Hinrich/Fish/Critt
Kobe/Brown
Artest/Luke/Ebanks
Gasol/Odom/Caracter
Bynum/Shaq
Coach Phil Jackson
Buss projected income for 2010-2011 is $32,000,000!!! because he isnt getting double taxed (twice what he made last year) Buss gets rich, wins ring #17 and the value of the Lakers goes up even more.
What do you guys think. Could we 3-peat w/ this team?

Lakers are 22-3 in OT last 6 seasons:Kobe best OT closer!

Where are you getting Buss only made 16 mill last year?
Your numbers don't add up. You forget to add if we go after Miller or Bell, so that eats up additional numbers.
Your also not computing raises each player typically gets a year.
And where did you get 16 mill are coming off the books? Fish was 5 mill, Farmar 2, DJ and Powell a couple mill, that's only 9 mill. So I think your numbers are off all around.
Better idea would be to cut his kids salaries all back a mill a year, they don't do jack anyway.
Pay Phil 7 mill for a one year deal.
Hinrich is not coming guys, let's give up on this, the Wizards wanted him, need him, and got him. And nobody wants Vujijc, so let's stop that notion.
I think Shaq will want more, as well as Fish, wouldn't mind either one back as a back up, but I'd rather have Farmar than Caracter or Crittendon.

Re: My Off-Season Plan w/ $#'s
i havent read through it to see your ideas, but remember that just cause 28mil came off, it doesn't mean they need 28 mil to match this yrs salaries. remember that players get raises.
and MC, did u include ammo's expiring in your 9mil number? seems like ammo's money makes it close to 16 mil.

Re: My Off-Season Plan w/ $#'s
From the OP scenario:
Pretending that Shaq and Fish would take their Vet Min (1.3 for 10+ year vet) and that this Hinrich (9.0) for Sasha (5.5) occurred (even though it doesn't work under the CBA);
Payroll = 92.7 (ie more than last year)
Bynum 13.7, Shaq 1.3
Pau 17.8, Odom 8.2, Caracter .5
Ron 6.3, Luke 5.3, Ebanks .5
Kobe 24.8, Brown 3.0
Hinrich 9.0, Fish 1.3, Critt 1.0
Its clear Buss wants to reduce payroll not increase it.
Plus, the tax threshold will decrease approx 3 mil meaning that much more added out-of-pocket for Buss, even with your vet mins adjusted, which is probably the reason Buss is trying to reduce.

He's got another year on our "books" if I'm not mistaken.

I think that would only be the case if the Lakers FO gave him a qualifying offer... but since they won't do that Ammo becomes a free agent in a few days.

Probably better to trade for a PG that cuts our total salary like Jack than it is to trade for Hinrich. Not sure if Toronto would take a deal with only one first round pick.

Again, how is saying someone's numbers are off hating? It's common sense and known mathmatics. Maybe next year for you on that?

Shaq will never take the vet min - even if he was 45 and still playing.

someone mentioned it on the GB, but would anyone be shocked if shaq signed for the vet. min on one of these potentially stacked eastern teams so he could get another right?

I really think Shaq will sign on with LBJ - maybe not for the min, but for 3 mil a season or something.
Players I see signing on to win rings this season:
Shaq (With Lebron - he wants to bring a ring to a 3rd star)
Big Z (Probably with Bron)
Brad Miller
Kurt Thomas
Jason Williams
Juwan Howard
Jerry Stackhouse
Theo Ratliff
Matt Barnes (Not that old, but doesn't have much left either way)
Jamaal Tinsley (Not that old, but doesn't have much left either way, may be too late)
Larry Hughes
Tim Thomas
Bobby Simmons
