Cavs new coach is Brian Shaw

If True I did not see that one coming at all.
With or without LeBron James, Brian Shaw will coach the Cleveland Cavaliers.
A source told FanHouse the Lakers assistant is finalizing a deal to join the Cavaliers just one day before James' much-anticipated free agency begins. Shaw was a finalist with former New Orleans and New Jersey coach Byron Scott after Michigan State coach Tom Izzo declined the team's offer earlier this month.

http://nba.fanhouse.com/2010/06/29/sour ... cavaliers/i don't think shaw would move on this if he had any indication that phil was retiring and he'd be the top choice.

I hope this means Phil comes back. Good luck to Shaw I hope that he has LeBron there because if not that team will be awful. If Phil doesn't come back who would be the coach next year now that Shaw is gone?

I was thinking that if this deal is true then either Jackson is back or Shaw knows that Jackson is gone and knows that the Lakers would look to sign another coach. My guess is Byron Scott would be on top of the replacement list. I also feel that Jeff Van Gundy would also be in the mix seeing how he always talks about what he would do with the Lakers if he was Phil during games. Plus Van Gundy had offers from teams around the league but turned them down. I'm not sure he would turn down a Lakers job.

well, the offensive scheme in the absence of both Shaw and Jackson would be interesting because I doubt Kobe is ready to move away from the triangle and Kobe will have a big say.
I like Scott better, but the bonus to Van Gundy would be not hearing him on TNT anymore.

Congrats to Shaw. He's a great guy and I hope he does a good job with the Cavs (but not too good!) and has a successful coaching career.

I've always been a fan of B. Shaw as a player and an assistant coach. Felt bad for him when he seemingly got pushed into a scouting position the year we signed Payton and Malone, I remember hearing he wanted to play another year with his childhood friend GP. Hope hes successful in Cleveland.
Starting to strongly think that PJ will return, question for me now is who replaces Shaw? Hamlben and Cleamons are official assistants but Chuck Person and Craig Hodges are special assistants, will one get promoted or do we hire a big name coach as an assistant to have someone lined up for when PJ does retire?

That's 2 assistants in 2 seasons snatched away from us. Another reason why Phil is likely the greatest coach.

damnit, we have two assistants left
Frank and i think Jim Cleamons, out of these two i would have to go with Frank, but next seasons just wont be the same without the Zen Master, i think he is the key for the lakers having a 3 peat

I have no link but listening to ESPN Radio today John Ireland is reporting that Wojo from yahoo is reporting that contract negotiations have stalled between Shaw and the Cavs. I heard this about an hour ago.

^ heard the same report from Wojo. Stalled over details, but still alive, details to be further discussed - coaching staff I believe he said was the hold up.

AP source: Cavs have not offered job to Brian Shaw
By TOM WITHERS (AP) – 28 minutes ago
CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Cavaliers are closing in on a coach.
Brian Shaw appears to be their target.
The Los Angeles Lakers assistant completed two days of interviews with the Cavs, who have not yet offered Shaw — or anyone else — a contract to replace Mike Brown as their coach, a person familiar with Cleveland's search told The Associated Press.
