He isn't fleeing the Lakers as much as he's seeking a better opportunity to show what kind of player he's capable of being.

"It's nothing personal against the Lakers at all, because I've loved just about everything about playing for this organization," Farmar said. "But I am at a point in my career where I want a chance to start, to see what kind of player I can be while playing (big) minutes."

And he just doesn't see that materializing with the Lakers, not with them seemingly committed to bringing back Derek Fisher for at least one more season, and certainly not after they signed veteran Steve Blake on Friday to either back Fisher up or possibly start if Fisher goes elsewhere.

In any case, Farmar did not sense a strong opportunity to start next year for the Lakers, which is why he and his agent asked them not to exercise their right to make him an offer, an appeal they honored a day before the start of free agency.

For Farmar it represented a classy gesture by the Lakers, and it expanded his opportunities considerably.

Had the Lakers extended an offer, it would have made Farmar a restricted free agent, meaning the Lakers could have matched any contract offer to him by another team.

That would have severely limited his marketability, other teams fearful they'd just be wasting their time chasing him if the Lakers had the final say in whether they brought him back.

But by waiving the right - and surrendering any chance at compensation if he leaves - the Lakers granted Farmar complete freedom to find a job and team that best suits him.

And for that, he is grateful.

"I really appreciate what they did, because they didn't have to, they could have treated me like a piece of real estate and potentially hurt my ability to take a serious look at what might be out there for me," Farmar said. "So for that, I am thankful."

"I love everything about the organization, my teammates and this city," Farmar said. "But ultimately I want a chance to start, and it's something I looked forward to every single year here, but it just never happened. All I've ever wanted was a legitimate chance to start."

It's an opportunity he always wanted with the Lakers, but due to circumstances it was never afforded to him.

"I'd come into training camp every season expecting and hoping this would be the year I'd get a legitimate chance to start or play bigger minutes," Farmar said. "I would work all offseason with that hope, that goal in mind.

"But it never happened. And I understand, Fish was there and obviously it was his job, so I just had to respect that and try to do the best I could in the minutes I did get. But I can't say I wasn't frustrated at times, because I'm a competitor and I wanted to contribute more."

good read, good luck to jordan.

Ya'll hate on Jordan too much.

He has a ton of talent. He just sucks major under the triangle. He will never be a Fisher or Blake type of player. He's a very poor man's Chris Paul IMO.

If he make it to the starting 5 on some team, I wouldn't be surprised at all.

honestly...u cant really blame farmar.

Farmar never really was given the chance to start, and he gets little minutes, that you cant really be effective in.

all i gotta say is, good luck to where ever he goes.

Comparing Paul to Farmar is like comparing Steve Jobs to Urkle. Although you're right about one thing, Farmar will never be an average PG like Fisher or Blake

Farmar is going to regret this in 5 years when he the backup on a 15 win team making 4 million a season

Nice talent and would have worked if we were going to change our offense and coaching this season but he can be good on an average to above average team. He still has a learning curve to take and he'll be fine in this league.

Who would start him? Honestly..I think he says all the right things but I see his career as a decent role player; someday maybe the 1st guard..off the bench

I could see someone with an up tempo offense getting good starting minutes from him. My problem is both his triangle fit and his general off putting attitude. Dude can run and is somewhat clutch as time is running out, but his fundamental passing skills suck hairy pelotas

Farmar at one point was poised to take over as the PG of the future for the Lakers. But since then, he has regressed quite a bit as a player. That is nobody else's fault outside of Farmar's. He doesn't like the triangle and never really made an effort to change his game to suit the offense either. As a PG, he has a lot of flaws as he is not a great passer, decision maker or shooter in the world. If he thinks he is going to start for a team and be an all star, then he's got another thing coming. I don't hate Farmar as a player, just thinks he takes himself too seriously.

Good to see him leaving with some respect. Sucks for him that we signed Fish his second season with Derek's durability he never had a shot at starting consistently, or even occasionally. But I still doubt that he starts anytime soon.

Minutes are earned in practice, not in the games. With that said, Farmer had plenty of opportunities to show the coaches what he could do to earn himself more minutes. This guy is horrible on defense. From the few things that I read he had countless run ins with PJ and had a hard time taking directions. Does he has some skills...of course. The triangle was just not a good fit for him. I for one will not miss him one bit. Hopefully he finds what hes looking for in another team.

He showed us flashes, but he never really improved. I never thought he was coachable. Nothing personal, but it's frustrating, because he has a decent amount of talent. He could have been a solid player for us, but his game didn't change one iota.

Chris Paul can score. Jordan Farmar has scored.
Chris Paul has superior court vision. Jordan Farmar can see.
Chris Paul makes other players better. Jordan Farmar has played with other players before.
Chris Paul revitalized a whole city with his play. Jordan Farmar played city ball.
Chris Paul is a solid defender. Jordan Farmar once played Earth Defense Force 2017.

I can see the comparison...but to me the easiest way to put this, regardless of how his career goes, all that matters is how he performs with the Lakers and he was not a good fit, whether its lack of talent or square peg round hole. Either way, Blake>Farmar for Laker purposes.

who does he want to play for? NYK would have him but they will look at 5 other options first. he could be a starter on a 20-25 win team.

We turned Farmar into Blake. I take that anyday. And Blake is here for 4 years at a pretty cheap number. Farmar will get signed somewhere. Not as a starter. Starters are high lottery picks these days. Paul, Rose, Williams and others like those. There was a reason Jordan fell to 26 in the first round. Closer to a second rounder.
