Why do the Lakers...

have so many old players that they haven't renounced their rights to?

doesn't LA take a cap hit for it?

I pray to any god that all those old players are off the books long ago.

Yes it's real, it was cap holds on those guys that's why they're still counted against the over all cap. You can't renounce the rights.

We don't hold the rights to players that have been retired for 5 seasons.

That can't be right b/c Ira Newble has played with teams since the Lakers. Either way, we don't have to pay for them, they just count against our cap during the off-season. Maybe it's to guarantee us the MLE?

The cap holds are because the team deferred payments to those players.

Smart Man^^

In addition, up to 30% of a player's compensation can be deferred. Deferred compensation is included in team salary in the season in which it is earned, not the season in which it is paid.

English please.

I doubt this is correct, there's no way we are still having these 'count' against us or that we are still paying guys that have been retired for so long.
