710 ESPN's "LA Sports Live" sucks

Post#1 » by So Gutta » Sat Aug 28, 2010 7:21 am

I listen to the radio at work for most of the day, and the daily show on 710 ESPN, the Lakers station, from 10am - 2pm everyday is called "LA Sports Live." It's absolutely unlistenable.

It's depressing because Andrew Siciliano and Mychal Thompson simply have no on-air chemistry together. It's been this way for years! They both seem like nice guys (although sometimes I think Mychal can kind of be a jerk) but they just don't "click" like Petros & Money or Mason & Ireland, and it's very difficult to listen to. It's slow, it's boring, it's not funny, it's not entertaining, it just doesn't work.

Yeah, it's cool that they pretty much talk Lakers 24/7 and I think Siciliano is a pretty intelligent sports commentator (I admit, he's grown on me), but Siciliano is in a tough spot having to "work" with Thompson everyday. The show moves better when Thompson is gone.

I generally think that Mychal Thompson is a good color analyst for the Lakers, and don't want to replace him. But I am just not feeling this show at all, and it hasn't gotten any better in the few years it's been on, IMO.

Thoughts?

1. Dan Patrick, The best in the biz and simulcast TV/Radio

2. Tony Bruno, These late night shows are so relaxed and hilarious as well as the Ben Mahler show. Bruno & Patrick are practically the same, both excellent.

3. Ben Mahler, I don't think many people even know who he is, but he's been around forever, and his show is very good.

4. Petros & Money, It's hard to see Petros is doing P90X, he's a big tub of goo, but I hope he gets shredded, it would make me buy it. Very good show.

5. Jim Rome (I used to like him the best, he's very bright much like Dan Patrick they are my two goto guys for a breaking story that I'm really interested in they can both break it down brilliantly) but he doesn't talk enough sports, and he gets interviews I'm not interested in, and will talk to them for 20 minutes: Hockey, Nascar, Soccer.) My favorite days are when Jay Moore hosts.

6. Colin Cowturd...Wow this guy is so annoying. He does what a three hour show and 90% of it is analogies. I know some of you love this guy, but I can't stand him. He's a last word guy like no other ". However he talks football more than any other and his spanning the globe is the second best segment on sports radio. Hacksaw has the best 15 minutes, lol. Cowturd & Hartman need to fight to the death, so we only have to listen to one of these two selfish, condesending, wuss bags.

Shows #7 & #8 excist solely because of the Lakers. Without the Lakers they're garbage shows.

7. Sleezy Kiss Ass Hartman & Dirty O'Brien, those guys are good together, but I have little respect for either of them. Funny story when i was shopping for a car, they were trying to sell me Dirty O'Briens Cadillac that was all duded out he was rolling in for free cuz he pimped Allen Cadillac on the radio, but as soon as his dirty girl voicemail went public they repo'd the car, lol.

8. Mason & Ireland (If they'd get rid of bleeding liberal complete douche wimp mason, it be a better show and they do the lamest blatantly obvious polls and run them all show like it's a tough question. Mason is great as a radio guy he's the Lakers sideline reporter AKA Lakers insider.

^^ I definitely agree with you on Cowherd. He is one of the most arrogant, annoying personalities I've ever heard in my life, and the fact that ESPN thinks that this is what their audience desires is frankly disrespectful and insulting.

Rome doesn't talk enough sports, but when he does, it's great! His takes are usually spot-on and HILARIOUS! It's a very entertaining show, I must say. Rome has his "shtick" and I "get it." I'm not always in the mood for it, but I respect it, and see his talent.

The fact that FOX would bring Pat O' Brien on board to help out Hartman speaks volumes! Pat O' Brien has been a joke for years. Hartman is just horrible. How on god's earth is this man still on radio? I mean, I can take 15 min or so of him on KCAL but to give him a 3 hour show? What the hell? Can't we find better?

Petros and Money click well. Petros is one of the funniest guys, just his voice cracks me up. Sometimes I wish Money wouldn't get as caught up in the humor of the show, and try to balance it out with a little more serious knowledge (which I know he has), but overall, I can't complain. They're a great duo!

Even Mason & Ireland flow together on the air much better than Siciliano/Thompson. Mason & Ireland, while neither are spectacular, are just 2 normal dudes talking sports. I can get with that. I can relate. It's nothing special, but it's not trying to be. It's got a really loose, casual vibe, and I find Steve Mason to be pretty witty. Hell, even Long/Martinez work together much better than Siciliano/Thompson.

All the late night guys are good. I just think that whoever's bright idea it was to put Andrew Siciliano and Mychal Thompson together, made a mistake.

We get Petros and Money for a couple of hours here in San Antonio. Good chemistry, funny guys. Pretty enjoyable show. But half the time I have no idea what the hell they're talking about. It certainly isn't sports, which seems to be an afterthought. They do financial and relationship advice, talk about movies and pop culture, their favorite restaurants, and every once in a while they might squeeze in a few minutes of sports.

I cant stand Petros and Money show, Hell is it even considered a sports show? Petros know absolutely nothing about basketball and his voice is annoying. Money is a basketball genius. Show would be alot better without Petros...just sayin...

Edit: just saw ST posts. Looks like we agree about it not really being a sports show.

I disagree with Gutta on MT and Andrew not having chemistry, the show is good when they're both talking basketball because both have a solid understanding of the game. I hate shows like Petros and Money because you have an idiot like Petros who doesn't know a lick about ball but tries to talk as if he does.

Seems to me Gutta you just have a beef of some sorts with Thompson. The bottom lline is when you have a show and they can talk NBA ball, it's better to have a guy who actually played like Mychal did rather than clowns like Mason, Petros, A.Martinez.......these clowns suck. Cowherd is another one who knows nothing about ball but talks as if he does. and 570 just flat out sucks.

Technically there's no show out there right now that's head and shoulders above the rest. LA radio is what it is.......it depends on who you like and that's who you'll follow.

I can't stand Jim Rome because it is very annoying to listen to somebody that speaks grammatically correct all the time.

Well, I just don't think Thompson is a very good host. Yeah, it's cool to have an ex-player, but there are a lot of really smart, well-spoken ex-players. I think Thompson does a good job on the Laker games, but having to listen to him talk other sports for 3 hours is just hard to listen to.

Siciliano has to constantly attempt to engage Thompson into the conversation- it really sounds like an old married couple, and they advertise it as such! I just don't find it to be appealing at all. At least Mason & Ireland mesh together, and you can tell they enjoy speaking with one another. I don't get that vibe at all from Thompson/Siciliano.

Really? You think petros and money are good radio? Petros has the worst, most annoying voice I've ever heard, and do they ever talk sports? Everytime I listen to them, (not often) they are like Hollywood Celebrity Gossip columnist wanna bes. They are by far, the worst radio show I've ever heard.

Really? You think there good? Really? :o Amazing.

:o So you have no idea what there talking about but it's good radio? :o wow, there's some odd ducks around here.

I do agree, after listening to Petros for a few minutes, I feel like I'm listening to a foreign language, can't understand what the topic is, so turn the channel. I think he thinks laughing hysterically is good radio, all while trying to talk. Wow, he's annoying.

Scale of 1-10

Dan Patrick - 9
This guy is insightful, uniquely dry humor, and overall entertaining

Colin Cowherd - 9
Definitely an acquired taste but he's got me hooked

Tony Bruno - 8
funny guy, a guy's guy

Siciliano & Thomson - 6
bearable and sometimes even interesting

Mason & Ireland - 5
their controversies are even scripted

Jim Rome - 7
used to be my favorite about 5 years ago but he's just not evolved enough

Petros & Money - 3
It's just not a sports talk show. I'm not into pop culture as much as I'm into sports. Maybe they can be TMZ's radio broadcast one day.

I prefer somebody who speaks like people speak, not somebody that pauses 2 seconds if there is a comma, 4 seconds at the end of a sentence before he moves on to the next sentence, pauses 3 seconds if there is a semicolon, etc. it is annoying. it has nothing to do with a person being ignorant. I just like my radio guys to speak like people speak and not like they are reading their thoughts off a piece paper.

I stopped listening to radio altogether when Loose Cannons got dismantled. VTB, Hartman, and Thompson... wow those were the days.

I like Thompson a lot because he is such a homer, and the fact that he often goes over NBA experiences... I like that.. though everyone picks on him, sometimes I even find it offensive.

Petros sux in that he's not a Laker fan, but he's rather entertaining. Pop culture if you will. Talking about random crap is sorta cool.

Jim Rome's gimmick is overdone... but he's very knowledgeable and has good interviews.
I don't really like Dan Patrick that much, but for some reason I respect him.

I like Ireland because I grew up watching him on kcal, and he seems kinda cool... But mason is such a...zzz

rome's segments where clones (wtf?) call in and try to talk **** to each other is bad. bad bad bad.
