Bynum injury talk - Phil hopes for Dec 10th return vs. CHI

Andrew Bynum participated in a series of resistance strength exercises on the sidelines Friday with the aid of trainer Alex McKechnie. It was the first time Bynum worked upright during the recovery process from offseason knee surgery.

"We hope that it's within a week or two that he's on the court with us," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. "That doesn't mean that he's going to go through a full practice, but he can do some of the things."

Bynum was originally cleared by doctors to return to contact drills and weight-bearing exercises on the knee in late October.

i guess he's ahead of schedule of this new very behind schedule rehab.

He's going to go out to dinner with Luke Walton and be out until the 2nd round of the playoffs.

seeing as this thread is about bynum and didnt want to start another thread, i was wondering if you guys know about (or have heard anything from the coaching staff) about when bynum will be back and playing in reg. season games. After his other knee injuries how long did it take him to get back into game ready shape?

Like Cash posted it'll be 1-2 weeks before he practices. One of his injuries kept him out of the playoffs in 08 and the MCL injury required no surgery, he only missed 4 weeks but was limited in the 09 playoffs. In 09 he had only 6-8 games to play his way back into game shape but he lacked explosion. This time will be different, he'll be in full game shape I'm guessing by January.

But why does a Mavs fan have concern over this ?

Maybe he's just German? Maybe he wants to know for homecourt advantage?

I wish he would find something to put on the knee or knees to keep them safe. Can not keep having injuries to the knees and be a professional ball player for a lot of years. I guess he is happy making 12 million or so this year a for the next. Better save that money. His career might be short if he does not find a way to keep his body in shape. Hope the Lakers explore all options on every player to make sure they are always at there best.

With his history, I wouldn't be suprised if he didn't step on the court before 2011.

update:

Jackson added that Thanksgiving is somewhat of a tentative target date for Andrew Bynum's return. Bynum ran on treadmill today.

Bynum steps up his recovery plan

Andrew Bynum, who recently started doing some conditioning workouts, has started running on a treadmill in his recovery efforts from off-season knee surgery.

The process has been slow, but Phil Jackson said Bynum is trying to fast-track his comeback. Jackson said he has “kind of” marked Thanksgiving as a possible return date.

“I think he wants to ramp it up a little faster than we want him to,” said Jackson after Sunday’s practice in El Segundo. “We want him to be able to go in and sustain that effort when he does get back. We want him back tomorrow, but if he’s back in two or three or four weeks, we understand what it’s going to take.”

Bynum initially said he wouldn’t be back until late November then pushed it back to December. Jackson said he isn’t worried so much about Bynum’s game but his conditioning.

“I think the basketball part is going to be easy,” Jackson said. “I think the conditioning and the strengthening and those things will take time. He’s going to need two or three practices and he’ll be back up to speed where he can go play. Reactive time, I think that’s an issue, where he can react to the speed of the game.”

its nice he wants to come back early, but i honestly don't think thats a great idea given his propensity to get injured.

right now, it just feels like he's about to go on a luke walton career trajectory
