Why does Kobe go outside the triangle?

He seems to do it a lot and it kills his FG%. I think he'd be shooting ~60% if he just stayed in the system and got easy looks rather than chucking everything he got. It's frustrating to see someone as good as Kobe have terrible statistic years(relative to his skill anyway) because he likes to play hero ball.
I have never followed the lakers unless it was playoffs or they were playing my team.
If Jackson was as good a coach as many claim him to be couldn't he get Kobe under control?

That's a terrible answer.

Sooo you trust that Kobe will become a glorified volume shooter and either shoot your team out of the game or back into it. Nice.

Uhhh, what? This is my only account. I was watching some YouTube videos to grasp the concepts of the triangle and I noticed that Kobe will defer from it, bring the ball up the court, and then take a heavily contested jumpshot.

Actually when Kobe brings the ball up the court, he does shoot it, but it would be a pretty high percentage shot. Kobe, when he starts picking his spots and moves without the ball instead of standing on the top of the key, usually ends up having a spectacular efficient game. I hope Kobe realizes this and stops the hero ball crap in the playoffs

Kobes fg% isn't not low because he plays outside the triangle.
Its low because...
he shots alot of threes.
takes alot of long jumpers.
his shot selection is poor.
his degree of difficulty per shot is very very high.
To name a few.
And the Lakers as a whole plays outside the TO very often.
1. Fast break transition plays are another version of offensive scheme.
2. Pick & roll. Every team in the league uses the P&R at some point in the game. Particularly in close games in the final 5 minutes. When a team goes to their bread and butter players.
3. Isos are another offensive play which is used mostly on teams with players who can create their own shot. Or are capable of drawing fouls. When points are needed.
Techincially all teams break away from their primary offense to run these plays. Not only Kobe and the Lakers. And its done by design. With the coaches permission if not specific order.
Check out my Chris Paul/Deron Williams vs Dwight Howard thread. Spin off the DHO vs Bynum thread.

kobe is a 1 on 1 player at heart, so he's going to iso up pretty often since he has permission to break the offense.

on point answser.
the dude thinks hes too good to practice with his own team, yet shoots jumpers after a loss to prove a point.....if lamar, gasol, artest, and fisher are bustin' their asses, i see no reason why kobe shouldnt.

Too good to practice with his own team? Im pretty sure thats not the reason..... more like he wants to conserve energy and keep that knee healthy

He does realize it. His demeanor and decision making in the playoffs are different than in the RS, with few exceptions. Even in 2001 when he was going thru the "turn my game up" phase, the entire team played the best triangle it ever achieved under Phil in the playoffs.
I don't want to just put this on Kobe, but in general, this team as a whole doesn't have too much respect for the RS. They're lazy as hell for most of it and were last year. They're just talented enough to win 57 or so every year in this shh league no matter if they follow the offense to a T.

kobe wants to win, but he wants to win "his way". he enjoys schooling people and constantly wants that validation of being "better than the other guy". other times, the offense just isnt clicking and kobe has to "do his thing" in order to get the lakers rolling again
most of the time i dont mind. he's volume shooting at a (~45%) clip that given relatively decent efficiency from the other dudes, generates 108-110 ppg. and because having a superstar being able to generate his own shot is tantamount when your offense is being pulled sideways, this is just a side-product of being that good.
when its annoying is when kobe does it at crucial junctures of the game... and when he chess-matches his way to a jumpshot as a primary shot rather than trying to take it to the rim where he shoots (?) 70% instead.

I honestly think one of the problems he doesnt really trust anyone outside shot . I can't blame him for that . No one is a good pure shooter on the lakers. Maybe LO?

I think a lot of it comes from him trying to prove things ad well. He's got all these injuries so he wants to prove he's still the "old" Kobe. Then almost every other week its has he lost a step? So then he had to show those guys up.
If he could look past that stuff the game would open up for him so much easier.

LA Times, Apr7, 2011: "...Jackson said of the meeting he arranged in 2000. "I prepped Michael (Jordan) a little bit that this kid was just learning the offense. They sat down and talked and the first thing Kobe said to Mike was,
'I can take you one on one.'That attitude seems to be mellowing a bit at times, but...
I admire Kobe's drive and individual skills, but I wish he added 'the original' MJ, Magic, as his model now...
(same drive and skills level, better/excellent understanding of team needs)
