Our failure to keep PGs in check..

Is it that bad of a weakness?
This morning, I was going through my usual round of sports blogs and came upon this.

It’s a guard-driven league, and that Lakers don’t have a great point guard.

Unfortunately, the proper angle has never been given to this topic. While it’s true that the Lakers have not had an All-Star at the point guard position since Magic Johnson, it’s not true that they’ll lose because of it.

We see the same stories year after year. When the playoffs start, the Lakers, no matter what round they’re in, always play against a top 10 point guard. If journalists and columnists wanted, they could save their drafts and replace the point guard from round 1′s name with the point guard from round 2′s name and pump out the same exact article, with 81% of it still being true (It’s not an exact science. Yet.).

I never thought about it in this sense, but dude brings up a good point in that we have played some of the best PGs in every round of the playoffs for the past 3 years. And even though they tend to have our way with us (hell, even the scrub PGs do), our team is set to succeed against the usual competition we face.
So, what do you guys think.. Is it that bad of a weakness? With our length and size, I don't think we should be too concerned with upgrading our PG position just yet.

Sure we can get by with a **** pg but can you imagine if we had a good. We're be the best defensive team in the league. Its not even funny how bad fisher is as an offensive and defensive player, their were numerous times yesterday where bynum was post checking his man and for some brilliant reason fisher decided to double only to clearly hit'em on this wrist with 2 on the shot clock. i cant state how bad we need a good pg asap. If not a good defensive pg then a good offensive pg to at least make the opposing team pg have to exert some energy

That story comes up every damn year. pls, make it stop -.-

2008
Iverson
D-Will
Parker
(Rondo)

2009
D-Will
Brooks
Billups
(Alston)

2010
Westbrook
D-Will
Nash
Rondo

We get torched by good point guards year after year, but we still win, thats not the problem. A team with a pg averaging over 24 ppg never won the chip either, so who cares.

good point.. he made it the year the lakers had 4 all stars including shaq, kobe, and e-jones. still he was never a great pg. and that was a while back.

We win despite our pg guard issues, not because of them. I agree it's not a HUGE weakness but it is a weakness nonetheless and getting titles would actually be easier/more dominant if we had a good one.

Why should ANY of us be concerned? Point guards don't lead title teams. The Lakers overcome that weakness with their strength, which is size.

Unless we face Chicago in the Finals, I have no reason to be concerned in the immediate future regarding the PG position. We're facing New Orleans in the first round. Just another semi-good team with an elite point guard leading the way. Been there, done that.

We win despite our PG problem is because we outproduce the opponents by A LOT in the SG and PF positions.

You can't have a picture perfect team. What other teams have as an advantage at point, we have an advantage in the interior. Teams can't match our size, we can't match speed at point guard. I'd much rather have size, how many of these so called "fast" guards have led their teams to titles other than Rondo ? Like Optms said point guards don't lead teams to titles, teams with size are the ones that usually win in June.

Exactly. And rondo didn't led the celtics to the tile, in fact he played very little against the lakers, I don't think he even finished any of the games for them...

we're going to get one eventually

its just a shame that anyone that comes in moderately rated, seems to shy away the spotlight when put on a team with kobe and in an offense where post offence is stressed.

everyone was so excited when blake hit the game winning three in game 1 against the rockets, i can only hope he gets better and more assertive like lamar coming off the bench

there are a few PG/SG targets every year that we take a look at and hope boston (backup), miami (starting/backup) don't pick them up. probably a pipedream but my dream acquisition this off-season would be arron afflalo, tho he's RFA
