Minnesota Timberwolves general manager David Kahn has decided to fire coach Kurt Rambis, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

Kahn isn’t expected to announce the decision until after Thursday’s NBA draft, but he’s already begun collecting information on prospective replacements for Rambis, including University of Washington coach Lorenzo Romar, sources said. The Timberwolves have gathered background on Romar for several weeks, and are expected to make him a candidate to replace Rambis.

timing really sucks for rambis, he really was in a lose-lose situation being asked to coach players like randolph and beasley.

i dont know how bad i feel for him, because i definitely think he'll get another job, but he was sort of asked to do the impossible in leading a ragtag group of young players to winning ways by implementing a semi-complicated offense and a questionable defensive system (wtf were the wolves even doing half the time on D?).

im sure Rambis learned a lot which was good for him, and the wolves are still making good progress, so i guess you could call it a win-win in the end.

He only had Randolph for the tail end of his second season, and Beasley actually played pretty well and did not have attitude problems. The guy went 32-132....His team got worse as the year went on.
Rambis may not be as bad as his record indicates, but his coaching style is not meant for the youngest team in the league.

Yeah, poor guy ... I wonder who gets that job? Adelman would be a nice hire for the Wolves but I doubt he wants the job.

He shot himself in the foot by trying to run the triangle offense on that roster. Teaching Beasley and co. the triangle would be like swimming in the ocean with 50lb weights tied to your legs.

A familiar face around the bench would be welcomed.

well as the defensive coordinator, rambis' defense was every bit as suspect as chuck persons, but lots more effective... so who knows?

well he just got fired before the draft...... Sucks for him if he would have waited two years he could have been the head coach for the lakers.

I don't think Rambis had any REAL chance to succeed in Minnesota... besides being run by a terrible front office IMO the T-Wolves have been devoid of any kind of talent or star power since the Kevin Garnett blockbuster trade.

To be successful in the NBA you need to have lots of talent on your team, right? To me, a decent coach should be able to sufficiently motivate his team, know the X's and O's, and tweak line-ups/rotations so that his players can be the most successful. But it doesn't matter what plays you draw up... if you don't have the star power and other players to "get it done" then it just ain't happening.

I'm not sure about the lack of talent part. Adelman took a totally deplete Rockets team with a $35 mil active payroll to 34 wins before last season.

Chuck Hayes/Scola/Ariza/Lee/Brooks/Lowry/Battier are not a significantly talented bunch either.

I'm not saying its fair to compare Rambis to Adelman, who is a very good NBA coach but most of his decisions have been rather suspect, like the long period before he contemplated starting Kevin Love.

Michael Wilbon on PTI just had a great sound byte...

"Everything the Wolves do is somewhere between stupid AND wrong"
