OT: CBA/Lockout/Talk Out Your Depression Thread

Here is what I don't get about this whole CBA/Lockout thing. The owners want a hard cap to restrict their spending... why not just have some self control? I mean Oden just got a 9 million dollar qualifying offer which is being discussed by teams losing money. No one sees that being part of the issue?
The Dallas Mavericks had to "spend $86 million on a $58 million cap to win a championship".... they signed Haywood to a longterm deal that will have him making 11 million in 5 or 6 years (completely unnecessary). Why did Atlanta toss all that money at Joe Johnson? Why don't they cut down their unnecessary staff at the management level? Why don't they just get competent owners...

Lakers got swept. I can deal with that. But it's such a bitter end to Phil Jackson's career. That's what's depressing me.

no movement on Draft night, Felton to the Blazers and Miami picking up Norris Cole for cash..that's what's eating me up

The lakers failed epically with the draft, no deals have been done, it's starting to look likely that no trades will take place... Tbh I wouldnt care if their is a season next year or not. Im doubting whether we can win a title with the roster as is, and if nothing changes, Id like to be spared watching us get knocked out again.

I just worry what Kobe would look like if we had a lock out. Coming back after a full season...would it have the Grant Hill effect on him or the Jordan in Washington effect?

Lets hope these guys get some negotiating done and they decide to extend the deadline. These guys are following the footsteps of the NFL. It sickens me to see that David Stern assured us that they will not follow the footsteps of the NFL but here we are deadline day and negotiation is still far apart. I guess greed is bliss for these players and owners...

Kobe will be fine, I never really worry about him. I'm more worried about players 2-15 which don't really look like a championship team anymore.

I know it can be a bit frustrating to see other teams making moves while our Lakers seem to stand pat. But lets keep in mind that Jerry West's former "protege GM" Mitch Kupchak will not mortgage the team's future for a knee-jerk reaction move.
In other words, I don't believe Mitch will make a move just to make a move. Remember back in 2008 the Lakers acquired Pau Gasol in the middle of the season... this was the right move at the right time and propelled the Lakers to three straight Finals appearances.
IMO if we keep this team together but acquire a real back up center and a point guard the Lakers will be just fine for next year... However, I wouldn't mind adding either D12 or CP3!

There's always 2 sides to all the rumored deals we hear... And most of the time the real offers never see the light of day...
I have no problem with us not making any of the moves on draft night... Rookies are almost always over-rated... #2 for Bynum was asinine...
I might have considered Iggy+ for Odom+... But who knows what Philly was really asking for... I trust that Mitch made the right decision there.
If we turn down a Dwight for Bynum deal, I'd be pissed... But if they want us to throw in Pau and Odom, I'm cool with skipping...
It's all relative... And I think the idea that Mitch is just sitting on his hands and turning down good deals just out of pure pig-headedness, is silly. It would be bad business and poor gambling... Two things Doc would never allow.

Just a quick question, now that the Bobcats have drafted Kemba Walker, you guys think we can pull off a Metta/cash/future 2nd rounders for D.J Augustin?
I mean Jordan is not the greatest in management...he may even fall for a Walton/D.J Trade.

I don't know how anyone can be blamed for this but owners. You don't need to be a genius to realize that giving max deals to the likes of Rudy Gay, Joe Johnson and Rashard Lewis is a bad idea. Reporting $300 million in losses? Hell, just look at a compilation of the worst salaries in the league and you'll find that money. If GM's were smarter with their money, and if most owners didn't blindly sign off on whatever paychecks, they would not be in this situation.
Crappy management is what is holding teams back from becoming relevant, nothing else. If you suck at drafting and continue to overpay scrubs, your team is going to suck. It's not rocket science. These owners are complete morons for handing out giant contracts to the likes of Eddy Curry and then having the nerve to complain about it.
Also, I've been hearing the argument about small market teams having to overpay just to keep their players? Bull. Players will stay if the team is winning no matter where it is.
I'm just hoping they resolve this **** sometime over the summer and we still have a season. Just because the CBA ends today doesn't mean next season is screwed. The 11th hour is pretty much late August, and I hope they solve it by then. What's pissing me off is that it doesn't seem like any side is in a hurry to negotiate and only like 7-8 players are showing up to even fight for a new CBA. Ugh.
In the meantime I'm going to watch all the old games I bought over the last two years. Watched some Detroit/Boston match from the 80s last night, was pretty good.

^ +1 watching old games. There are tons of torrents available I expect more of them will be floating this year with the lock out going on. Lakers v Kings series is one I want to revisit. Also I want to take in some old Mavs games when Nash was running point.

can we please stop acting like the previous draft is the only way we can improve and we desperately need a trade?
