Kobe Bryant receives Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy

Post#1 » by iamworthy » Fri Jul 1, 2011 1:12 pm

Kobe Bryant has knee surgery

Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant underwent an experimental but increasingly popular procedure last month in Germany in an attempt to help heal his oft-injured right knee, a source confirmed to ESPNLosAngeles.com on Thursday night. The Los Angeles Times first reported the story.

The Lakers' leading scorer saw his minutes and productivity decline in the 2010-11 season, and has said much of this summer would be dedicated to allowing his body to recover.

Bryant had surgery last July to remove bone fragments, the third procedure on his right knee, and sat out most of the team's practices last season to rest his knee. In January he said his knee was "almost bone-on-bone."

The procedure, called platelet-rich plasma therapy, consists of centrifuging the patient's own blood to isolate platelets. The platelets are then injected into the injured area to accelerate healing. The minimally invasive surgery has a short recovery time and does not restrict movement.

He didnt have surgery if you read the article or knew anything about PRP. Its a form of injections.

I just pulled the story from ESPN. Whats funny is that they took down the link. Maybe they are re-wording it to not say surgery.

Edit: They didnt change it. Ill change the title of the thread.

Im sure you guys heard about this already.

NBA super star Kobe Bryant tests Bayer 04’s cold chamber

The 1.98 metre tall athlete was welcomed by Carsten Rademacher, Head of the Rehab Centre. Bryant spent three times three minutes in the chamber during the different stages. He started off with minus ten degrees Celsius, followed by minus 60 and finally minus 110 degrees.

Kobe is doing some next level stuff.

We just got a lecture about this at our lab meeting for new research ideas, it seems like no body really knows why it works so well.

Which one, the freeze chamber or the PRP?

Okay tell us what you all know about the other athletes who got this done?

How did Nadal preform afterward? I dont follow Tennis.

We all know Heinz Ward, I guess its okay to say his results were a success because Ward is still a monster.

What about Acie Law? Anyone remembered how he preformed?

Roy's was a success I would assume. He came back late in the season ahead of schedule. He was able to be the Roy of old.I think he has returned as the Alpha Dog in Portland.

I hope Kobe fairs just as well as Roy or Ward.

Nadal is at the top of the sport. Tiger Woods also received a similar treatment, came back and won majors while being at the top of his game. He also received scrutiny because the doctor he used had a well known usage of HGH on his patients, but that's neither here or there.

If this procedure can benefit Bryant like it did Nadal, Tiger, and Ward, well then the league is in trouble.

Well Nadal's issue wasn't arthritis which seems to be Kobe's problem and its mostly due to age and wear and tear.

I doubt you'd see anything close to the same improvement in a 33 year old Kobe as you see in a 25 year old Nadal.

True. But you'd at least have to expect a drastic improvement over what we saw last season. Which is a reason to be interested in itself.

I wonder how the procedure affected Tiger's athleticism.

Good luck Kobe, hope it works!

LATimes (paper version) has an article on the surgery, I mean procedure. Supposedly it is an experimental procedure that seems to work much better in conjunction with HGH and other drugs - but becomes then against the rules in several sports...

:-?

3 minutes in minus 110 and minus 60 C?

I think 3 minutes in minus 110 celcius would certifiably kill me.

25 in tennis is the equivalent of 30 in Basketball. Doubt we'd see that kind of improvement though..

Well, my soccer team in Brazil uses this to treat our players.

Last year our forward had a complete rupture on his posterior tight muscle and that injury required 4 months to heal and he came back in one month. it surprised everyone, some people thought it was doping... but it's considered legal by WADA.

If Kobe did supplement this treatment with HGH, how would that play out in regards to the NBA? Are players still bound by PED laws during a lockout? Or is this a free for all period? Can anyone shed light on this?
