All this playing overseas crap

Post#1 » by Desiderium » Mon Jul 18, 2011 6:04 am

I really don't get it. these players make millions and millions and they're all freaked out they wont have work for a season. ESPECIALLY players like kobe/dwight/deron/lebron/wade/etc who have other deals and endorsements as a source of income. idk why would they risk a serious injury or put more mileage on their knees...

It's a strategy to get the owners to do something about it. The owners are risking their assets to oversea teams. So the pressure is all upon the owners to do something.

big time players arent gonna leave the nba to go play overseas anyways...why would, for example, jerry buss fear he's gonna lose kobe to china? i dont think players going overseas will have an impact on how long the strike lasts...

basically this one. and I don't see big names really committing themselves long term to overseas teams unless they're really desperate to play, need money, and want to bathe in the limelight (aka Starburry).

Well, hes gotta keep himself in basketball shape (different from being just in shape), plus hes not facing any big competition so it won't hurt him. I do agree with you somewhat, he should be resting but how much is enough rest?

Competition is always in his blood, you can't get that from pick up games.

They could risk laziness by doing nothing. People always find something to complain about thats for sure.

Let them play. Gives us something to read about instead of people like Odom getting in car accidents. I bet if he was playing overseas he wouldn't be in NY in that position. :P

c'mon...he was attending a funeral. Be easy, lol! Right, I think it's all a tactic to make the owners straighten up and fly right!

I think it's a bigger picture!

First and foremost it does put pressure on the owners to get something done because if players have the option to play overseas and continue a revenue stream "in theory" the players could care less is the lock out continues. (Keep in mind thats the impression they want to make but all players dont have the luxury)

Then there are some players that will make tons of endorsement dollars by getting some exposure by playing overseas, even if only for a month or two. China and Europe are so ripe and finally have eyes on NBA players in regards to endorsements and big dollar contracts.

So the whole overseas thing is a negotiation ploy as well as a real opportunity for some players.

I don't mind it, just as long as they televise the games.

Playing overseas is a great opportunity for players to promote/market themselves.

Euroleague basketball is technically more challenging than the one played in the NBA, it's what the NBA was in the '80es. It's a new and different challenge. And if the owners stick to their proposal, international contracts may even be more lucrative than the ones that the NBA will be able to offer.

Sounds like someone never hooped...they don't play because they make millions, they play because they love basketball and organized competition. It's not about the money, it's about playing the game they love, keeping in basketball shape, and having an amazing, once in a lifetime experience to play in another country.

Pickup games don't pay as much as the overseas offers.

Big name players like kobe want the lockout to end. they are willing to give the owners anything, because they will make max million contracts regardless. They just want to play. It's the average players that are forcing the lockout, there's a lot more of them. And the average players can't get contracts in Europe, at least not 99% of them, so it won't affect the lockout.

Players do not get pay checks till November. So they are not making any money right now. Unless you could the millions from endorsements. I could live the life just off Kobes interest from his money.

Plus players want to play in their prime and will make more money post taxes than similar contracts will here in the states. It also increases their global marketability.
