The Lakers made contact Wednesday with the representative for free-agent guard Shannon Brown on the first day NBA teams could talk to agents.

Brown has been the main backup to Kobe Bryant in recent seasons. Brown opted out of a contract that would have paid him $2.37 million this season; he made $2.15 million last season with the Lakers.

"We talked about Shannon but it's a little early to see where it goes," agent Mark Bartelstein said Wednesday.

Brown, who turned 26 on Tuesday, averaged 8.7 points and 19.1 minutes last season, his third with the Lakers.

The Lakers have only one free-agent tool, the "mini mid-level" for three years and $9.4 million, but they wouldn't have to use it to re-sign Brown.

Teams are allowed to talk to players' agents but can't reach verbal or written agreements until Dec. 9, when training camps are scheduled to open. The Lakers begin the season Dec. 25.

The NBA collective-bargaining agreement is expected to be ratified next week by a majority vote of 450-plus players and 30 owners.

i'm resigned to the fact that its probably easier to sign brown with his bird rights and use the mini mle somewhere else. hope he comes cheaply.

resigning S. Brown may not be that bad, Mike browns offense might require shannon to not think as much. being able to concentrate on the play being run rather then reading and reacting in the triangle. Hopefully this time around shannon wont be the having as many f/g attempts as bynum did. The only thing he needs to work on if he hasnt been all summer is his 3pt shot, he was lights out in the beginning of the season then was garbage the rest of the way. besides who else are we going to get

Idk about that, he did a pretty good job at not thinking last year.

i think shannon should re-sign as long as its to costly... given what we have locked in at the moment, wouldn't be to bad to have shannon come back ...

if he turns out that he doesn't work in mikes offense then open him up to trade / package with others in a bid to get d12

Shannon Brown has all the physical tools to be a great defensive player, but he doesn't appear to have a functioning brain. I wonder if MB can get him to play defense.

Maybe Mike Brown can turn him into a good defensive player. He did turn turn some poor defenders in Cleveland into respectable ones.

We don't really have any good young guards (at least that we're aware of) so yeah, I say sign him for sure.

Oh, for Christ's sake this can't be true

I would much rather give the backup SG role to Goudelock if we don't score anything in the FA.Brown is garbage

Thats exactly my point, look we all know that shannon has arguably the lowest bbiq in all of basketball. Now in a system that doesnt require shannon to read and react so much like in the triangle then maybe we utilize his physical gifts and run some plays every now then for him. even under phil they had to run basic plays for him. all im saying is we need youth and i cant think of any other option

We need quality....Why do we need youth without value?Shannon Brown absolutely sucks, there's a reason Mike Brown benched him in Cleveland and was a scrub warming the bench in Chicago and Charlotte(had a stint in the D-league too)

He has no business being a primary backup on a contender because he can't do anything above average besides his dunking ability, which is not that useful comparing with other areas

His shooting is average at best(catch and shoot, putrid on the move),poor passer and ballhandler, average to below average defender despite his great athleticism. To top that,he makes terrible decisions and for some reasons when Kobe's on the bench and we need to feed the bigs he starts taking fadeways all over the defenders with like 20 % accuracy....when he's not taking catch and shoot shots he's a mess, and even in catch and shoot situations he is not spectacular to the degree that warrants his PT

We need shooters first, athleticism and youth second...just look at Dallas, they won with veteran leadership AND 3 point shooting, they weren't young either

Mike Redd despite his age and injury background, would be a much better fit...And I'm sure he'll take the mini MLE(same contract Brown will ask) if we were interested in him

I have more faith in our two rookies than in Shannon Brown.

He's better than a fresh out of college 2nd pick (hes at least physically capable for a season) and let's face it, we don't have many options with only the mini and I assume minimum contracts. If he makes threes like he did to start last year and plays some D he'll be fine. I'm convinced Ron doesn't have a brain either and he's had a successful career in the NBA.

With the options limited as they are in this FA market resigning Shannon to a 1yr contract may not be a totally bad idea. The options are pretty limited the best FA i think available in the Lakers price range is Deshawn Stevenson after him u have Redd who's been barely able to get on the court the last 2 season. Trade options with the Sasha trade exception are also limited one player i've heard alot is Daniel Gibson and he didnt do very well in Mike Browns last couple seasons in Cleveland. Amnesty options seem to be shrinking by the day.

If I'm Shannon Brown I'd rather go somewhere else where I feel like I might have a larger role.

If I'm the Lakers, I'd rather sign a guy to the minimum.

Shannon Brown had HIS CHANCE last year. He had a role. He had minutes. He had opportunities.

Players can always get better, but DAMN! If he couldn't do it in a contract year with the whole world watching and the opportunity every game to play significant minutes ... then I say turn the page.

Some people are talking like resigning Brown is the Lakers top priority which it isn't but as the season gets closer and other options at backup SG go elsewhere resigning Shannon to a 1yr deal isn't a bad fall back option. I'll say this again the options for backup SG are limited Affallo is the best option and his qualifying offer is in the Lakers range but he'll probably want more than 3m a yr. After him you got guys like Tmac, Stevenson, Willie Green, and Michael Redd not exactly a deep list.
