Lakers Hold Players Only Meeting

Nothing major but thought it was worthy of discussion on an off-night. Apparently, Kobe and Fish called a players only meeting following last night's win against the Blazers.

Their message was clear: Trade rumors do not matter; your feelings about management or the coaching staff don't matter; all that matters is that the 14 men in that locker room support and believe in one another. If they stay together and stay on the same page, they can get to where they want to go as a team.

But there are other issues as well. Some of the Lakers are having trouble adjusting to Mike Brown's coaching style, which is a sharp contrast to Phil Jackson's. One player said the Lakers' body language and attitude at the shootaround was poor and that it set the tone for Sunday's listless performance. But he expressed optimism that Brown, without being asked by the players, chose not to have a shootaround before Monday's game.

Another sign of growth in the relationship between Brown and his players may be his decision recently to grant them more freedom on the floor. For most of the season, Brown has called out offensive plays practically every time down the floor. But about a week-and-a-half ago, Brown began taking his foot off the brakes and now he's calling plays only about half the time, according to a player. Having won two titles in the past three years, the players feel they deserve that kind of freedom and will blossom with it.

That shh cray. It seems to me like they don't really respect him a whole lot. Should have hired a more established coach.

The thing I took away from it is that he's adjusting to the team as the season goes along. Very happy to hear that he's giving them more freedom to run the offense.

Team Meetings are hardly EVER a GOOD sign... They most likely mean ISH is about to hit the fan. :-? Just a historical fact about NBA players and my personal observation on team chemistry.

IDK, I think they should push heavily to hire Sloan, that's just me though.

We are obviously missing the leadership that a certain mustached enigma from Gonzaga brought to this team...

I can appreciate Brown's will to lead this team, but I just feel he doesn't have the experience to coach the Lakers. Still giving him the benefit of the doubt till the end of the season.

do you have any empirical evidence for this or are you just frightening everyone on a hunch?

My guess is that it really wasn't that big a deal. I bet they were talking about things like the run to the playoffs after the break and avenging the Dallas sweep.

A lot of those guys are new and even the coaching staff might not really get what it takes to come together for the playoffs, so Kobe, Fish and Pau probably have to get guys on the same page more than they normally would.

int he la times article kobe made it sound like it was more of a "we reached the half way mark of the season let's tighten things up from this point on" type of a speech by fisher.

You know its funny how when it comes to our fan base we want results right away. I dont think anybody is giving Brown a fair chance. I mean personally under the circumstances I think we are doing okay. I think we are a good p.g away , but then again thats just me.

Yeah I read that too. While it might be true I think it's more likely Kobe trying to downplay the "meeting".
