World Peace Researching Retirement

By Eric Pincus
Senior NBA Writer

As the trade deadline nears, the Los Angeles Lakers continue to explore moves that can either help them in the short-term, without giving up power forward Pau Gasol, or a bigger move that lands a long-term solution at point guard while better situating the team for the upcoming supertax as instituted by the new Collective Bargaining Agreement.

The answer has yet to be decided but in the meantime, Lakers forward Metta World Peace has asked the NBA Player Association for instructions on how to file retirement papers.

According to his agent David Bauman, Metta intends to finish out his contract (two remaining years at $7.3 million and $7.7 million, the latter an early-termination option for Peace) but is preparing for the possibility that the Lakers amnesty him this coming summer.

Retirement would essentially be a threat to dissuade a team with cap room that might have designs on putting an amnesty claim in for Peace.

Peace might prefer time off or even playing overseas rather than getting claimed by a team outside of his comfort zone.

Back towards the end of the offseason, Los Angeles Clippers guard Chauncey Billups toyed with that same notion when he was waived by the New York Knicks. Billups initially threatened retirement but the Clippers took a chance, eventually winning over Chauncey before he went down with season-ending Achilles’ injury.

Metta wants to control his own destiny as much as possible. Retirement would cost him $15 million in salary. It remains to be seen if that’s the kind of money Peace would leave on the table.

To date, Peace has finally begun to overcome a very slow start. With improved conditioning, has his performance and impact has grown for the Lakers who are dominant home team but still extremely shaky on the road.

The future is unclear as to how the Lakers proceed with the March 15th trade deadline. Peace, given his multi-year deal and 15% trade kicker, isn’t widely expected to be dealt.

As the team builds for the future, the Amnesty Clause may make this Metta’s final season with the squad whether that leads to retirement or not.

Alot will depend on what he does in this years playoffs...If the front office was dying to Amnesty him the way the majority of the fans were, they would have done it already

I'm interested to see what the Lakers do with their amnesty. Larry Coon was tweeting someone earlier about the possibility of the Lakers holding on their amnesty in case Kobe breaks down. It seems a team has until the 2013-2014 season to use their amnesty and the issue seems to be, can the Lakers remain competitive with Kobe's salary on the books if he breaks down? Interesting question, I normally don't care to entertain such things but Larry Coon was talking so I figured I'd share it since we're talking about the amnesty clause being used on Peace.

I think the Lakers thought that he would be better this season, with the triangle going away, and he is at least finally showing some signs. Keep in mind the amnesty clause can only be used in an off season, if it could be used in season, I am guessing MWP would have already been amnestied, which would give us a lot more oprions, but it is too late for this season.

Fully aware that the deadline has passed. But they had their chance in the offseason when so many thought they were gonna use it on him, and they didnt. Maybe the Mike Brown thing was a factor. The fact that he coached him in Indiana and wanted to give it a shot. Or maybe the Jim Buss thing was also a factor. Ive heard more then one time that Ron was Jims guy. Either way, I think most people agree here that he has the ability to play an important role come playoff time. The same cannot be said about Luke, who we no wont be a factor and is set to make almost the same amount of money. I think using the Amnesty on him would make alot more sense from a team standpoint.

Luke has actual value next year because he's expiring. We're saving on to the amnesty because we have no reason to rush into using it cap wise.

I understand that, but ron could have actual value on the court. Not just as some amnesty case

Lakers don't know how to properly use an expiring. all we got for sasha were two 2nd rounders and joe smith who played like 15 mins with the lakers in his career after that.
