I pretty much just noticed this by the "eye test" from watching during the year, but was shocked to see that this unit was the THIRD best 5-man rotation over the course of the season...And this is out of TWENTY lineups!! The reason why this is so effective is because Bynum dominates, and we can space the floor with shooters, and/or can have a slashing Barnes, whenever a double team comes. Even with the trade, this fits into what we can put out there, personnel-wise.
Best 5-Man Units (out of 20)
1. Fisher-Bryant-WorldPeace-Gasol-Bynum
2. Fisher-Bryant-Barnes-Gasol-Bynum
3.Blake-Goudelock-Barnes-Murphy-Bynum

you realize they rank lineups by minutes right? its not the 3rd best anything.
Blake-Bryant-Barnes-Murphy-Gasol is a statistically better lineup.
as is Blake-Bryant-Barnes-Gasol-Bynum.
as is our starting lineup, obviously.

Your last two are starting lineups, not bench. You are correct, though, about Blake/Bryant/Barnes/Murphy/Gasol, though, although Blake/Goud/Barnes/Murph/Bynum has nearly as much success with almost double the playing time (95 minutes vs 57 minutes, i.e. more proven over longer amounts of time) that Blake/Bryant/Barnes/Murphy/Gasol have (plus, we are talking about a bench lineup w/out Kobe).

totally misread the bench part.
anyways, the Goud/Murphy/Bynum does not have nearly the same succes that Kobe/Murphy/Gasol has.
the Kobe/Murphy/Gasol lineup has an ortg of 128! and drtg of 98, with a +/- of +29
Goud/Murphy/Bynum has an ortg of 105 and drtg of 98, with a +/- of +11.
the other lineup is clearly better, granted the sample is a little smaller. i think Gasol is incredibly underrated as a center, that is really his position, and i think hes still bet than bynum. you put a stretch 4 next to him (like we used to with Odom) and you have an amazingly versatile front court.

Good points, Matt, although when you look at win percentages your lineup is 72.7%, vs 66.6%, which is still better, but not by a mile. I think a lot of the offensive superiority in that lineup is/was due to Kobe going off and having his 40+ point games this year (He is the leading scorer in the league, so I would expect that a lineup with him in it would have advantages offensively). Again, you are correct, but I am talking about a bench lineup, and likely a lineup w/out Kobe in it.
Anyway, just by going off of the "eye test," I think we can all clearly see how effective a lineup is with Bynum dominating, and allowing him to be spaced by shooters/slashers. I originally mistook that this was based on minutes, but the lineup's win percentage is still one of the best, with a relatively large number of minutes to prove it's sustainability.

I think we're basically OK...
But the Pau/Bynum combo is starting to worry me. It's been long enough for it to be pretty much seamless, but it seems like Pau just isn't really that into it.
To me, instead of being a 1-2 punch down low, it's more of an either-or... They rarely seem to be attacking at the same time and creating shots for each other. It's almost like the plays are set up to feature either Kobe, Bynum, or Pau at any given time... But not to get them all going at once and feeding each other.
Against the Mavs, it seemed to work... Against Memphis, it just fell apart, and Mav-like games seem very rare this season.
Making the pairing work was the primary focus of the coaching staff in the off-season, according to MB. It's just scary to me that they still can't seem to get a flow going.
It'll never happen, but maybe Pau being our '6th man' would be the best fit... Frankly, I'm also worried about all the minutes the 2 of the are playing as well.

I posted our best line-ups in a thread by ALL HAIL a few weeks ago. Use NBA Stats Cube (or w/e it's called) for this type of thing.

bynum will draw a double everytime, if not then he'll post up and score. once he gets the double teamed he has 4 decent 3 pt shooters he can dish out to.
