Jamaal Wilkes makes HOF
Looks like the Lakers aren't just going to retire Shaq's number next season. https://twitter.com/#!/LarryCoon

All due respect to a very, very solid Laker, but the Hall of Fame is a joke. Three All-Star games is Hall of Fame worthy? Although I suppose once they let K.C. Jones in, all bets are off.

They said on Boston radio that Pat Riley has been pushing this for years.
The whole election process is political maneuvering.

I think you might be underestimating Silk just a bit.
2X NCAA Champion
Also was one of the leaders alongside Bill Walton who led that UCLA team that won 88 straight.
4X NBA Champion
Once with the Warriors during his rookie season as he won Rookie of the Year as well.
3 times with Los Angeles. Plus that 82' Deciding championship game in Philly when Kareem couldn't play in due to injury. I was born that year but as my Pops told me even though Magic played out of his mind with a legendary triple double no way the Lakers win without Silk.
17 ppg and 7 rpg career average
Sounds like a legit H.O.Famer to me

I'm a huge Hall of Fame elitist. I look for reasons to keep guys out as opposed to putting them in. It should be reserved for the absolute best of the best, not the very good, and that's the level I think Wilkes was at.
Very, very good, in fact, but he was not a dominant player. I don't even think he made a single All-NBA team, so his resume is pretty flimsy to me once you get past the rings. I feel the same way about Gail Goodrich. Again, very, very good, but not great, and that should be the standard.
That said, the Basketball Hall of Fame is the worst of all the major sports. The combination of NBA and college and foreign players, and the fact they wait so long to put some players in while electing active coaches, is nonsense.
Once they let K.C. Jones in with zero All-Star appearances, they pretty much removed any standard for inclusion.

Super Solid Point Sedale.
I'll admit I'm a bit biased towards Silk cause he's part of the Lakers legacy. LoL
An as for the Gail Goodrich situation his number is retired also on Staples Center wall of legends.
Which I had a debate on another Lakers site which I feel since he got his number retired they better retire Pau's #16 as well IMO.
P.S everytime I see your username I picture Sedale rolling off to the left from a Vlade pick/handoff for a money 20 footer LoL

Re: Jamaal Wilkes makes HOF
I get where you are coming from as well. I'm just super, super protective of these kinds of honors. For example, even as a die-hard Vikings fan, I'm not sure if John Randle should have made the Pro Football Hall. (Whereas Cris Carter, in my opinion, should have been first ballot, but I digress.)
I think Pau is an extremely safe bet for retirement as he'll probably get into the Hall with his European resume added to the mix. (Which I'm not a fan of, BTW. The NBA should have its own Hall, based strictly on achievements within the league, but I digress again.)
As for Sedale, I always had a soft spot for him. We finally got a good back-up point guard for Magic, and he had to retire. I still remember Sedale popping somebody for 40 or so -- I want to say the Knicks -- on our only TNT appearance of the season in the mid 90s. Solid player.

Re: Jamaal Wilkes makes HOF
Silk is deserving IMO. He got his, it's just that he did so very quietly playing alongside big names like Barry, Cap and Magic. He made the All-American 1st team twice, won ROY upon arriving in Golden State, made the All-Defensive 2nd team twice there and would go on to average over 20 PPG during his best years in LA. A lot of folks overlook the 37 he dropped in Game 6 of the 1980 Finals because of what Magic did, in fact a good chunk of Jamaal's points came in the third quarter following a close opening half.
As for him never making an All-NBA team, check out the names of the guys who did make the All-NBA 1st and 2nd teams and you'll see why, talk about stiff competition from guys who got their's while garnering a lot more attention. If All-NBA 3rd teams had existed at the time he'd have made a few for sure.

Re: Jamaal Wilkes makes HOF
A good point. I still don't think a couple of thirds would be enough, but like I said, I'm an extremely harsh grader when it comes to this stuff. Even so, Basketball Reference only had him as a 50 percent shot in their Hall of Fame probability meter, which would seem to support the notion that he's a fringe selection.

Re: Jamaal Wilkes makes HOF
The HOF is already a joke. Someone with ambition should make a "RealGM Hall of Fame" on one of the boards and have posters recommend players for the each induction class and then vote a certain number in. Have a few induction classes early then space them out to the point they happen every year or so.

Cosign......who cares how many meaningless All Star games he made. He's the 10th leading scorer in Laker history, that in itself says a lot.Kalidogg24 wrote:Sedale Threatt wrote:All due respect to a very, very solid Laker, but the Hall of Fame is a joke. Three All-Star games is Hall of Fame worthy?

He's a fringe HoFer. If he had played for any other franchise than the Lakers, it would be a mute discussion.

That says more about the Lakers than it does about Wilkes. In many cases, I'd agree about the All-Star selections being meaningless. Here, however, I think it can be used as a gauge of how he was regarded amongst his peers at the time. If you're rarely considered among the best of the best while you played, how can you stack among the best of the best of all-time? Take those rings away, and his resume gets pretty flimsy.
