I bring to you the question: "Why the Hail Didn't We Sign Gilbert Arenas?

Before he signed with Memphis, the consensus was: "If he hasn't been signed by now, then he must be damaged goods."

I always thought that was a bullsh*t arguement considering that he would've signed for ANY contender for the same money that Kapono is making.

In eight games, he is averaging 15 minutes, 6.5 points, 48% shooting, 43.5% 3PT shooting and playing very inspired defense with his 6'10 wingspan.

I understand when the Lakers have to make certain conservative, cost-cutting moves (ie dumping Fish, Odom, and Vujacic), but I cannot understand why they don't take low risk moves by signing guys for the minimum who could potentially help this team a great deal.

There is absolutely no reason the hometown boy Arenas (and his jump shot) should not be in a Laker uniform.

I'm a pretty conservative guy myself, but the Lakers are WAY too conservative when it comes to doling out even minimum contracts.

Kupchak and Co. are much more concerned with trying to get bad contract players to somehow up their value than ACTUALLY IMPROVING THE TALENT OF THIS TEAM.

It happened with Walton for at least two or three seasons. Even though Walton was clearly done many years ago, Kupchak and Co. continued to give him that backup SF spot in hopes of him increasing his trade value. Only after signing Barnes last year did they finally wave the white flag on Walton.

It's happening with Steve Blake now. Even though it's pretty clear Blake belongs on an athletic team with a couple of drive and dish wings (ie Miami), the Lakers will continue to ride him out in hopes that he can somehow, someway play better and increase his value.

How many good, solid, minimum contract players will be passed up in the process of waiting for Kupchak and Co. to right another one of their wrongs (Blake, Walton, Radmanovic, McKie)?

I was so mad watching how well he was playing in the grizzlies uniform. What could have been, smh!

At least no one saw that coming though, he's been in the league for years and never got any PT that showed he can play like this.

Arenas has a history of being able to play when healthy. I understand being cautious since he was sucking balls for a while, but still it would have helped a lot if we paid him the minimum like Memphis to see how he does, since he was ready to come here.

Pretty much what I said in the around the nba thread. Pretty much no risk in gambling on him, especially for cheap, as there's no way he'd be worse than Blake. Just getting Blake out of the rotation would be an improvement.

I wanted this signing to happen so bad, had been posting it everywhere. Bummed it didn't happen

As long as it takes. Also don't be surprised that he is packaged up in a trade with Gasol this summer. Also the Lakers don't like him especially after the gun issue he had in DC.

Funny, I didn't see this thread after his first four games in a Grizz uniform.

That doesn't mean the Lakers front office is flawless. Yes we should have signed him.

Exactly. Just b/c the Lakers have won rings doesnt mean they're perfect. The problem is how many rings they have lost out on due to poor moves by management. Signing Arenas would have given the bench a real scoring threat. Signing MWP to that big of a contract was a horrible move. 5 years? With a player option? Seriously?

No one knew Artest would fall off so fast.

Considering the length of his contract and his age at the time, they shouldve made a shorter deal. No team in the NBA was clamoring to get Artest at the time. 5 years for a guy that was 31 at the time is way too much.

Signing Agent 0 for a prorated minimum salary was a no brainer - so Mitch must not have a brain.
