Ian Thomsen's Top 3 Coach of the Year Candidates:

Tom Thibodeau
Mike Brown
Gregg Popovich

A dozen candidates are worthy of votes, but Thibodeau is the runaway winner. His Bulls remained the best of the East despite the periodic unavailability of their top three wings -- Luol Deng, Richard Hamilton and 2011 MVP Derrick Rose. At the end of a season filled with drama and potential crises, Brown has renewed the Lakers as title contenders (pending the health of Bryant). Popovich, once again, was amazing in turning over his roster with young contributors around the Spurs' eternal Big Three.

David Aldridge's Awards:

COACH OF THE YEAR

• THE WINNER: Gregg Popovich, San Antonio
RUNNER-UP: Tom Thibodeau, Chicago
THE OTHERS: Scott Brooks, Oklahoma City; Mike Brown, L.A. Lakers; Alvin Gentry, Phoenix

Brooks and Brown both had to deal with huge expectations, and delivered. Brown had the heavier lift, replacing a dude with 11 rings on his hands and pretty unchallenged status as the greatest coach of all time. There have been times when you could wonder if he really was still in charge, given the Lakers' penchant for breaking off plays and Andrew Bynum's occasional insubordination. But the Lakers have been pretty strong down the stretch, winning some big games on the road without Bryant, and look a lot like Brown's Cleveland teams. And he did win a COTY award there, as I recall.

keep up the good work mike!

Shattered my expectations for him, didn't see us finishing like this way when the season started.

Probably wouldn't have if Fisher was still on the roster.

I still think with the talent we have we'd have a better record with most any other coach.

Pretty much met what I expected from the first day of this year. Now get us past round 2 and I'll be greatly impressed.

I wonder what this team would've looked like under Adelman.

Potential title favorites.

Mike Brown is an average at best coach who is once again getting recognition for who he is coaching rather than his coaching abilities. The tune will change once this team is bounced at early.

Pfftt, he deserves no love at all. Terrible coach, I freaking despise this guy. I wanted to give him a chance earlier but not I'm almost positive that had we gotten Adelman, our record would have been better

Adelman probably would be the favorite for coach of the year if he coached this group of guys. I think the COY comes down to Pop and Vogel.

I'm not sure how... Thibodeau, Popavich, Vogel have all been considerably better

not sure. COY for me should be given to the coach who rose his team from the ashes or who was consistent even with his stars out.

Thibs with the slim lead.

Mike Brown is a nice person I suppose. But I got a kick out of that picture of Odom looking all tough holding his two fingers up to show his two rings and all that. He would act like hes one of the leagues' toughest players when he was with the Lakers. But the guy got ridiculously exposed with the Mavs. He couldn't play cause he got sad he was traded? That's like your girlfriend cheating on you and then breaking up with her (requesting a trade) and hooking up with a new girl only to get erectile dysfunction. When you think about how he pouted with the Mavs, you get a kick out of that picture.

I predicted us to be a lower seed team before the season and I was very surprised with coach brown until a month or so ago... Then I changed my mind.

But reflecting now, Kobe looking younger and going crazy at the beginning of the year was what kept us a top seeded team... Not Brown.

With that being said...

Then the team started playing really better, even the bench, and he's trying to adapt all the time, which can be a frustrating thing, and surely was for me, but it's his job. Afterall he had no pre-season and limited training sessions to work with. Therefore he was forced to use the season to test players and formations. He still changing it one game before the playoffs (putting hill as the first big off the bench). And that's a good thing...

Also I was furious because nothing was being done to improve our PnR defense, so I thought that might be on him, but he just acknowledged it and said it's our bigs fault, bynum the most, not doing what he wants. Bynum camping the paint is not his idea. That relieved me.

Now that I see we're being well coached (Adelman would be better but not by much)I feel it's up to the players. Kobe needs to play smarter, Gasol is looking much better than the Gasol that ended last season and if bynum wants to win a ring being a major piece than it's up to him.

Motivated Bynum needs to show up in the playoffs and if he does I feel we could win it all. Not sure he'll, tho.
