"Bynum will be murder in the post a yr from now"

Post#1 » by dockingsched » Mon Jun 18, 2012 2:43 pm

I hadn't read this article, came out about a week ago.

Kevin McHale recently talked to reporters and the topic of NBA post play came up. You can click the link to read about that. Eventually a question about passing out of double teams came up, and he had this to say about it:

http://probasketballtalk.nbcsports.com/ ... -eurocamp/

The question came up of how important it was for a big man to be able to learn to pass out of a double-team in the post — a skill Lakers center Andrew Bynum has struggled to develop as he’s started to face that extra defender inside. McHale said that’ll come, but smiled when the question was asked, because it’s really the very last step to come in a competent post player’s game.

“First of all, there’s like three prongs in that thing,” he said. “One, you’ve got to get good down in the low post. Two, you’ve got to get good enough to beat your man steady. Three, they double-team you — that’s the third prong, and then you’ve got to pass out, OK?

“You learn pretty quickly, because in the NBA especially, when you start getting double-teamed a lot and when teams have success, they’ll do it every single night. Bynum a year from now will be a very good post passer. He’ll know where to go, he’ll be relaxed, he’ll read it, and pass it out. Then you’ve got murder on your hands because the guy can score down there and he can pass out. And any time two (players) guard one in our league, three have got to guard four. And three cannot guard four in the NBA, the players are too good.”

This again brings up the question "Do you hold on to Bynum at all cost's" It's a serious conundrum to be faced with. He very well could legitimately become the best big man in the game within the next year or two....or not!

Post passing is his weakest skill and i agree with KM once he learns to pass out of the double and triple teams it will become very difficult to beat the Lakers or whatever team he is on at that time. The thing with the Lakers currently is we dont have the outside shooters to knock down those wide open shots that will be created from those double and triple teams.

Totally believable, I want his maturity to pick up then we have something. He needs to show that not only he wants to be a Laker but the next Laker that helps take us to the level.

I say keep him..."one in the hand..."

I also think that if Bynum KNOWS he's going to get more touches in the game and within the flow of the game, that he will be apt to pass more and pass more efficiently.

Not always knowing how much he is going to touch the ball or when, I think leads him to taking some bad shots or not moving the ball as well as he should - or can.

I think the only way we move Bynum is if it's for DWill - in conjunction with - Howard forcing a trade to the Lakers for Gasol, picks, and filler for Howard and Hedo.

If Howard is not going to become a Laker, then I think the Lakers stay off of a Bynum - DWill deal.

Agreed. If I were on the coaching staff I'd spend a lot of practice time double & triple teaming him. He will the get the hang of it.

Im not sure how much the article touches on this but one thing that people need to realize about passing out of the double team is it's a two way street. Not only does the guy getting doubled need to make the correct play, but his teammates need to get in the right position to make themselves available for the correct play.

I believe Stu Lance had mentioned it during a pregame broadcast this year when they were discussing Bynum's initial struggles against the hard doubles he was facing. It's difficult to make the right pass when your teammates don't find the right open spots for you to hit them, and with our "work in progress" offense last year more often than not the teammates were not in the right place.

With a full offseason to work on further implementing Mike Brown's offense, I feel we'll see much better team play when it comes to reacting off of the double teams Bynum will continue to demand.

It doesn't matter, to be honest. The blueprint has been out on this team for years - Even if we're dominant inside, all you have to do is collapse the paint and our incompetent shooters can't make dog ****. Dallas did it, OKC did it...Future teams will.

Which is why management needs to make it a priority in getting good quality shooters. At times we saw what happens when our team is able to make the three point shot, we nearly become unbeatable.

Oh that's a relief. I thought Bynum got arrested for murder.

Nice to read but coming from a Celtics source makes me paranoid.

Should point out that even Shaq needed time to develop at the NBA level into a very good post passer. Obviously, he was farther along than was Bynum when he hit the league and he was a starter and #1 option right from the word "go," so he had more experience with the double teams and thus developed faster... but it's worth the note. Bynum needs to see those doubles on the regular, have some guys to pass to and it'll come, at least at a basic level, I think.

makes me wonder how the triangle could have benefited Bynum if he was the focal point on offense. spacing on the triangle have more defined roles for the 5 players on the court and could have served Bynum better, instead of finding where his teammates are during double teams in Brown's system.

McHale ain't saying nothing I didn't know........I've been saying this for like the last 2 years. It's a process and Drew is getting it.

In before Garnett/Pierce/Allen for Bynum. Let's make the Lakers really really old and lets let Rondo/Bynum do some work and the Celts get to add another FA.
