4 years for $54 million or 5 years for $80 million.

Sounds like a solid play to me by James Harden

After watching the Celtics yesterday, I'm sad we didn't pick up Barbosa. :(

:D Anthony Davis made his debut against TD and Spurs and looked mighty impressive. I'm in love with him and I'm not even a Hornets fan.

Sixers fans are already turning on Bynum and he hasn't even practiced for them yet.

I hope Dwight re-signs. That 33/14/5 game yesterday was brilliant, its like having Shaq back.

Seriously he had a great 4th Q and they seemed the far better team once Lebron got injured.

I enjoyed watching the Sixers. that wing rotation is deep. didn't realize Wright was that much of a chucker.

Not really new news but I've been watching the Porkhorov thing from afar for a while now...

http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/nets-owner-mikhail-prokhorov-focusing-full-time-politics-article-1.1193912

I was telling Net's fans a year ago, when they were all hyped about his deep pockets, that he was going to focus on politics and that the Nets were more of an investment than a passion.

My current prediction? As the team starts to succeed and the marketing plan is in full swing, he sells out for a nice profit. He will be on his way out next season.
I think that's always been the plan.

I've had my eye on this too, soon as he finished 3rd it became apparent to me he was going to do what it took to reach his apex in politics. I was sketchy about him because of how involved he was in politics and this only confirms it, as you said kilroy, the man is gonna make a nice profit off this.

Meh.. no, if he were to sell the team he'd not create a monstrous team salary with the potentially killer salary cap coming up, he wants to own the team, its his pet project of turning scrap into gold, which he has been doing all his life.

Only he can afford to pay that money and incur a loss with a smile.

I think you underestimate how much that team is going to bring in this year... He's not going to loose money, he's going to make a fortune.
And I'd wager, the value of the franchise will never be as high again as it is this season. It's a marketing goldmine right now. That can only diminish as time goes on.

Going by the Forbes evaluations for the Nets the team was valued at $357 million with a player salary of $66 million and no taxes, and a loss of $25 million in operating income.

Their salary spikes in the next two seasons, which will make the cumulative luxury tax total somewhere around $140 million by rough estimates by 2016, which is when their current contracts expire along with a player salary of around $340 million.

Going by this rate, the new owners will have to spend as much money as they pay to buy the franchise over the next 4 years just in salaries and taxes, which is an incredibly unattractive option.

The real asset here is the land around the arena that Prokh has grabbed for cheap citing the arena development, which he will build with shopping, entertainment and luxury rentals. I don't think the team is the asset here but the commercial property is. The team is a gamble he's taking on because the commercial rewards are great.

May be someone with more financial knowledge can expand on this.
